The 1776 token is similar to Steem in that it is attached to a social network where you can earn currency by posting, getting likes, etc. and there is a video platform FreedomTube.
If you sign up on https://freedom.social you can get 10 free 1776 tokens for free!
(1776 Tokens are currently valued at 0.25 USD.)
You will need to install a wallet on your computer to create an address to receive the tokens. Follow the instructions at the "Claim your 10 free 1776 tokens now" link. Eventually, you need to fill out a form on which you can only choose United States as country. If you live somewhere else, you can send an e-mail to [email protected] to get them, it worked for me!
If you leave your wallet running, it will start mining.

What is beneficial about it that makes it a competitor to steemit
Wanted to ask the same. Just a copy of steemit serves no purpose.
I believe there are important improvements that can be done. We need a different model for monetarisation. There should be voluntary adds. The money should be paid to both content creator and reader according to time spent on post and other metrics relevant to the advertiser. No matter if viewer is a whale or not.
The rest of funding should be voluntary tipping for good content.
I'm not saying that it is better than Steemit, just that you can get some free tokens.
