The world is insane... we might as well play along ;)
Stimpson J. Cat, the new owner of Genesis, paid 250 Eth for this very first Crypto kitty...
That's about 119328,67$.
No, that's not a Typo. This Crypto-Kitties thing, even if it's a fad, has blown up to gigantic proportions.
And, as a scientist with some knowledge of psychology, i'd say it's pretty normal:
- Collectibles have always been addictive.
Fossils, Stamps, Pokemon, Magick the Gathering...
There's always been a certain je-ne-sait-quoi that drives humans nuts when it comes to possessing "rare", "unique" items, whether there is an actual use for them or not.
And recently, several companies have been looking into profiting from this "collectible craze".
The most succesful being Niantic, with their Pokemon GO AR game, with a daily revenue estimated at around 469,000$.
- Money is going haywire
This is just my personal interpretation, but look at how the cryptocurrency market is spawning completely nonsensical applications, that still manage to get investors.
And then there's the game's integrating currencies that can be converted into real money, which makes doing tasks inside of a virtual world something people can earn a living from.
One of the most notable examples if this I know of is Second Life (even if it is waning a bit, apparently):
All I'm saying is this:
The day that money loses its actual connection to "real" activities, is the day we get closer to that nice Star Trek moneyless society in which everyone's got food and housing ( with maybe a "monetary"/reputation based system allowing some to have bigger houses than others... I doubt mankind will ever get to complete "equality"...)
Of course this is all just speculation on my part (except the part about collectibles being addictive and people spending way more than the "intrinsic worth" to get their hands on certain items. That's pretty much fact).
I'm definitely going to play with Crypto-kitties a bit !
I won't invest much (I used 10$ I had laying around in MetaMask to get my hands on 2 kittens that looked funny), but I'll see if I can't make a profit / get some of those insane kitties they have:
Here's my CK account and address, if you want to gift me a kitten ;)
ETH address, doubling as CK address now:
The entire thing may have been inspired by similar projects, like MoonCatRescue (which came out in August 2017, so earlier than this), CryptoCats or Crypto-punks, or the projects might have been inspired by it.
I have no idea and don't care, it looks fun and Steemit allows me to play around with Cryptocurrencies without the nagging sense of waste one normally gets when spending "real" money.
wtf...? is this like a game character...?
Ahaha... It's a collectible , kind of like Pokemon cards, except contained on the blockchain, tradeable through the blockchain, and going up in price WAY faster than they should have any reason to.
Oh, and you can breed them together in Mad-scientist style, as they've got their own genetics system. They're all hermaphroditic and lay eggs XD XD XD
It's also so popular the entire thing is now inaccesible XS
I got in just in time, as now the website gives a 404 every time you try to even look at one of the crypto kittens XD
wow, that is nuts, I mean its a cool idea, but yeah its a tad overvalued in my opinion ;p
Course it is. WAY overvalued, especially since the entire Eth-user market suddenly decided to try and use it as a trading platform XD
But so are, technically, pokemon cards, certain kinds of stamps, and other collectibles.
The internet has yet again been taken over by cats, and we have no say in it...
I like
hi, do you know the smart contracts (addresses of) behind Cryptokitties? I heard there are 7 interoperating smart contracts that powers this Dapp.
I only know of this address:
https://etherscan.io/address/0x06012c8cf97bead5deae237070f9587f8e7a266d#code
I don't know if it contains all the contracts or if there are other linked addresses, though.
You playing with some kittens ? XD
Cats that lay eggs? That's not disturbing at all ... :p
It's a bit less disturbing than Dwarf Fortress' sporulating animals.
They literally reproduced as if the males spread spores that fertilized any females they could get to XS
But then Dward Fortress' are most famous for turning half of players into monsters who farm cats to feed them to their dwarfs, while trying desperately to fight of an army of goblins and keep the local blacksmith from murdering everyone in grief because his pet goat died.
Oh, no. Just no, no, no. (rofpml)
Mind you, I have complete sympathy for the local blacksmith. Losing his pet goat ... tragedy.
Read BronzeMurder, and see how nice and cosy we have it in OUR world.
Seriously... The DwarfFortress universe would NOT be a nice place to live in XS
I have enough trouble with this world, thank you very much.
lol
