Is the tradition of making this type of fabric still strong or are the old traditions dying out in china too like the rest of the world?

In China yes pretty much dying out. Yesterday I found out an instagram page http://instagram.com/bluehanded_indigojohn an old Chinese man is trying to promote this craftmanship in England. Quite cool. I guess the dying out of traditional culture is indeed the world thing, maybe except in Japan. So far I couldn’t find any country wherein the traditional culture could be kept as well like Japan.
