Trip to Kent part 2 : Rochester

in #curangellast month (edited)

With its Norman castle, and historic architecture, Rochester is a cherished Kentish town. The High Street is packed with quaint, independent boutiques and Dickensian shops with a great range of cafes, restaurants, and bars.

The stunning Rochester Cathedral, dates back to 604 and is the second oldest Cathedral in England. Built on the highest part of Rochester’s Roman city wall, the town's castle was established to defend the River Medway crossing. There are breathtaking views from the keep, and Rochester Castle's is one of the tallest keeps in the country. .

Victorian novelist Charles Dickens spent his most impressionable childhood days in the Medway. Historic Rochester inspired the author so much that he featured it in his work more than any city other than London.

The Restoration House for example was used in Dickens’ novel ‘Great Expectations’ as the home of Estella and Miss Havisham. Nearby is Eastgate House a grade I listed building that also featured in the works of Dickens.
