Book Review: High Magick by Damien Echols

“If you’re doubtful that magick is real, well, just know that Damien Echols is the only person to ever have walked away from death row in Arkansas.”
That introduces Hope's review of Damien Echols’ new book, High Magick: A Guide to the Spiritual Practices That Saved My Life on Death Row.
What makes this review even more special is that the author lived within touching distance of the events of “The West Memphis Three”, the backdrop upon which the most significant parts of the author's life is woven. In fact, Hope was among the “murder groupies” that supported Damien and friends when it was easiest to jump the gun and wrongly castigate these youths.
“Imagine yourself in a roasting, mosquito-ridden cell with a death sentence over your head and killer guards watching your every move,” Hope reckons. “How do you deal with this for 18 years and come out of it not only sane but thriving, writing books? High Magick tells you how.”
This is both an intriguing story and an excellent review. I personally want to get hold of this book, thanks to Hope's class treatment.

This is not like anything you have seen or read before. This is the story of Honeyboy, from the horse's cat's mouth. Yes, it's an autobiography of a cat.
“Aloha. My name is Honeyboy and I am from Hawai'i. A vet just told my Human Being that I have only two more weeks to live. This is the reason why I want to tell You my life story. It is a story about the purest love between one of us and a Human Being. It is also [a] wonderful story with some very happy, some very sad events and unconditional Love at its core.”
And truly wonderful it is. I can't pretend this is a very happy story, as it has its fair dose of issues of life, from broken bones to losing the place one grew to know as home, and of course losing family members (both feline and human members).
This chronicle started with this post, the first part of a trilogy, and has since moved on to the third part here.
“Twenty one years living in the state of Hawai'i and fifteen thereof in the immediate neighborhood of Pu'u O'o – the offspring of Kilauea volcano on the Big Island called Hawai'i – have thoroughly transformed the human I once was into a person that is finally connected with the Universe. A truly omni-talented being, with great love and dedication to whatever it is I am inspired to do, I found out that I could very well relate to Felines and that the Felines in turn displayed a deep affection to me.
“The distinction between 'matter' and 'energy' has been upended. Matter and energy are factually not separate entities, but the first is a reflection of the latter. Suddenly, the world becomes one, everything is the Universe. With this realization, an understanding is born that acknowledges that nothing cannot not be. To walk in a Feline's Paws, one has already accepted the Quantum world as a world that does not discriminate based on what species one belongs to.
