You’ve probably missed it, but hidden behind the bot-bastardised tragedy of the trending pages there is actually a thriving array of good-hearted and mutually supportive community curation initiatives through which actual-people work together to reward quality content.
Steeminc has promised us that communities (and supposedly happiness?) are just around the corner, and that, along with Smart Media Tokens, these will basically solve all of the social injustice problems that are currently amplified through this platform.
Until those days arrive, below is an overview of currently existing communities who are just getting on with the business of making people happy right now, simply by putting the social in what might otherwise be perceived as anti-social (and anti-human) platform, (I've read the second half of that sentence several times, and I THINK it's English?!?)
NB I’ve no doubt missed a lot of stuff out, so please feel free to add in anything else in the comments (I’ve set up a small ‘steem-bounty’ for comments!)
Edit - thanks to the many comments below, I've also done a second post: even more community curation initiatives on steemit covering (I won't say all) the initiatives I missed below... lots of good stuff going on!
Manual Curation initiatives
These are the teams of people on steemit who trawl the platform for quality content and upvote it to boost author rewards. To my mind, getting a vote from one of the accounts below is (mostly) like getting a stamp of approval that your post is worth something. It’s also nice to know that at least someone different is actually reading what you write.
NB The way get upvoted by one of these accounts (the humans behind the accounts) is to produce quality content - you’ll need to read the daily/ weekly roundups they do in order to figure out what quality content is. Of course you can always try connecting with the people behind the accounts to!
This is not (yet/ if it every can be?) an exhaustive list…. I’m focusing on the main ones at first, and the ones which interest me…
- The curation and engagement leagues maintained by @abh12345 and sponsored by @paulag and @carlgnash - it’s basically two leagues, both of which encourage engagement: one for ‘total value of curation rewards' and one for 'engagement' (length of comments etc.) with prizes for the winners. I’ve put this at the top of the list as it’s brilliant, great people, and it sort of ‘brings whales, dolphins and minnows together’ around manual curation quite like nothing else on the platform! Vote @steemcommunity as a witness to support.
- @curie - consists of around 90 manual curators who trawl steemit for undiscovered content (they get rewarded with a finders fee) and if agreed by other curators, the post(s) submitted get a @curie upvote, which can be worth a substantial amount. With around 115K SP, a 100% upvote is worth $30. New, typically low rep accounts with quality content are much more likely to get an upvote with older (typically higher rep) accounts with the same quality of content. Analysis has also shown that accounts which have previously received an @curie update are less likely to quit the platform. (Certainly worked for me!). @curie has a witness account you might like to vote for!
- @ocd - is a manual curation team who, much like @curie, trawl steemit for undervalued content, submit the posts for consideration and the best get an upvote and are included in the OCD-daily round up posts. There’s a ‘regular’ round-up and an international version too. With nearly 40K SP, a 100% upvote will earn you $10. @ocd also has a witness account you might like to vote for.
- @asapers is a young curation initiative which again manually curates undervalued content - a 100% upvote is worth $0.20, but still worth having! The more manual curation, the better, after all.
- This post will give you an idea of some of the excellent creative, collaborative projects going on which are supported by sndbox.@Sndbox is a ‘steem incubator for creatives and communities’ - I think this basically means that if you do something creative and collaborative which the sndbox team like the look of then you’ve got a chance of getting a massive upvote from their nearly 60K SP account.
- introduce yourself post@Sndbox-alpha is a curation programme which supports new themes every month - with rotating teams of curators who seek out good content and upvote and publicise said content. The will give you a basic idea of what the project’s about - the ultimate goal of @sndbox-alpha is to set up regular communities of curators focused on curating specific topics.
- The ‘pay it forward’ curation contesthere imagined and maintained by @thedarkhorse - you basically have to nominate 3 steemians with a reputation below 50 for a chance to win SBI (@steembasicincome). For a very clear idea of what an entry might look like see this entry by @fitinfun
- The Minnow Support Project -aims to >Accelerate the minnow growth through community accounts, social interaction, resteems and upvotes. This post outlines the basic details of MSPweekly top five positive PAL posts - submit your PAL posts (have to be in line with PAL values, which basically means good vibes posts); (b) The MSP Music and Art Curation ContestMSP music curation competition. @aggroed founded the MSP, and I’m sure he’d appreciate your witness vote, he’s got mine! There are various ‘subsidiary initiatives run through MSP such as (a) The MSP ‘Community Curation’ (upvotes 10 submissions per week, and you can delegate to it) ; (c) @Isaria’s - @Isaria manually curates 5 songs a week, from the msp-curation account and another account.
- this linkThe @dropahead curation trail upvotes posts the best posts (ITO) that have had 20 votes but which have got rewards of less than $20 (there’s higher tiers as well). You’ll need to submit your posts to the relevant discord group…. You can join and find instructions by clicking
- The steemit comment challenge is a great iniative run by @danielsaori in which he selects one post a week for users to comment on - the best comment gets $5SBD and 200 SP delegation, and a second prize of 200SP delegation.
- Dustbuster is a nice initiative by @Davemccoy - all you have to do is to send him your posts or comments and he’ll upvote them so they’re worth more than $0.02 cents (the threshold at which you don’t get paid!)
- Promote your post liveinvite to the discord group if you wish to do so. - Basically a show in which you can promote your post for others to upvote. Posts are put out by @freedomexists. NB this is linked to an initiative called whaleshares which I’ve only just stumbled across, don’t know much about it, but it looks like it’s worth checking out… This is an
- nominate awsome authors to win them a $100 upvote 12 hour special individual curation efforts. It’s also worth keeping an eye out for random acts of generosity such as @markymark’s one off (of course he may have done it before!)
Community oriented pay for upvote initiatives
the concept may sound like a bit of an oxymoron, but check out the two upvote initiatives below, they really are different to the dreaded voting bots….
- this post@qurator is an account which offers a lifetime upvote for those who produce quality content. It is primarily aimed at supporting minnows who see very little reward for their posts - to register you simply need to transfer 4 steem to qurator for their basic ‘tier one’ upvote service. If you upvote qurator’s posts, you qualify for higher rewards, and if you delegate SP then more still! (basic details in
- steem basic income!@steembasicincome - one of my favourite initiatives on steemit: guaranteed upvotes for life, reclaim your investment after 6 months. To register for SBI you have to transfer a minimum of 1 steem to SBI and nominate one other person, you both get 1 share in the programme. You can send more. A number of people put on competitions through which you can win shares in SBI. Check out @steembasicincome’s feed for regular updates. Details in this post here -
Other good community stuff to look out for…
this is all good stuff that doesn’t really fit into ‘regular curation’...
- dollar a day charitable given project@Pennsif’s - @pennsif started giveing 1 SBD/ day to some of the charitable causes championed by various steemians back in November 2017, a few other people joined him and now he’s looking for enought people to make it $1000/ month. Or as he says, there is a higher bar: >On current prices, we would currently need 838 people out of the 60,000 active people on steemit to join with this and we would be donating US$1 million per year !
- How to create a bounty@steembounty is a nice way of providing people with a little reward for commenting on posts - it’s quite complex, but basically you send (for example) 1 SBD to @steembounty with the post url in the memo and then the comments get a share of the bounty based on the upvotes on the comments (80% author to others weight) - check out further details here -
- this post@trufflepig - this is a bot with uses an algorithm to measure the quality of a post taking into account number of paragraphs, headings, spelling, language, and it leaves a comment on ‘the best 25 posts’ of the day based on these metrics. I’ve only just come across this, still tyring to get my head around it… Details in
- I should also mention the various topic specific curation groups out there - such as @steemiteducation, or some of the many location based groups which curate specific content.
I could mention many other, focused accounts which reward ‘good work’ - @utopian-io is worth a special mention for it’s rewarding developers and data analysts for example. I guess some people are also worth special mentions for their massive delegations - @hendrikdegrote with @curie and up until quite recently @fulltimegeek for sponsoring the curation leagues.
Good hashtags to use to get your posts noticed…
to end on…if you’ve got a hashtag or two left over, then below some useful hashtags, then below are some useful hashtags which might get you noticed! NB not my strong point hashtags, bit tired, so maybe someone else can update them in the comments!
- #ocd-resteem
- #newbieresteemday
- #steembasicincome - if you’re entering one of their compeitions
- #sndbox or #sndbox-alpha, if your post fits in with their themes!
- #nobidbot - assuming you haven’t used one, you might get a random upvote!
Final Thoughts
Obviously I've missed a few initiatives out, so please plug away in the comments below!
If you want to ‘break into’ to the above curation circles and become a curator yourself (NB I don’t curate on any of these) I guess the way in is to connect with the people who do the curating via their own work on steemit, and/ or get in touch with them on their various discord channels.
Peace and all that!
Karl.
Thanks a lot for the overview! :)
There are, of course, many guidelines which should be followed - just like it's usual for scientific content in general. But it's definitely one of the best communities, when it comes to promoting reason, common sense and science :)Although I'm missing one big curation team: the @steemstem community, which aims to promote high-quality scientific content. Every article, which is curated, gets picked manually.
+1 for steemstem .
Good addition! I was never going to get them all. I gave you a slightly larger upvote (even though I'm low on VP) to bring this comment up to the top. I'll do an edits section in a few days!
Cheers, good work!
Karl.
What an awesome list you put together here and thank you for including @asapers and @thedarkhorse's Curation Contest too. You had me hooked with,
So true!
Manual curating is a lot of work, but I love hearing the appreciation from those high quality, unnoticed steemians when we give them the kudos they deserve; it makes it all worthwhile.
The Curation Contest is another great initiative that is growing weekly; again, the work involved is well worth it when I see others selflessly searching for other steemians to curate.
Thanks again Karl!
I really liked taking part in that pay it forward contest for the first time this week. It's now got me into a habit of listing <40 rep peops who comment on my posts, or who.... (actually I won't give my discovery secrets away!) as potentials for next week.
The comment competition is just genius too!
Oh and thank you so much, I was PARTICULARLY pleased with that opening line, I must say... not quite up there with... 'It was the best of times, it was the worst of times....' or 'There is a spectre haunting Europe'... but then again those chaps had a bit more time to play with didn't they!
The bots really are a shit show, but why focus on the bad when so much good is happening as you highlight. Glad you have enjoyed joining in the fun of the Curation Contest! Thank you for listing it here as we are 100% trying to grow this organically...no bid bots! Which means any and all support like this really helps get the word out.
Thanks for the comment - very good, cleverly thought out initiative the pay it forwards contest!
Wow, this was cool. I love to see the @asapers in your list!
We're still young and just a small group of people, but we're growing for each day... And we will continue to grow! :)
@asapers is a fantastic ground-up initiative, just the kind of thing I'm happy to support!
Thanks for the mention the @asapers appreciate it. We would not have formed with out @hitmeasap s delegation
You should check out @thesteemengine with out their example we wouldn't have had a model to work from @ethandsmith and the rest of the team there have built a really strong community.
It's a good project @asapers.... and I'll certainly check out @thesteemengine.
Cheers!
Thank you for including the A Dollar A Day project.
I just realised I should have mentioned your excellent radio show too, should be there tonight. I'll add in edits/ additions later in the week!
Cheers!
Karl.
These can be great for new users to encourage them to keep going. There's a lot of self interest on steemit and so it gives me hope to see less selfish projects doing good. I've used @steembasicincome to support a few people and I plan to add more. Another I support is #RunningProject and their voting bot @isotonic that is used to support the running community.
It's tempting to just take the money now, but the rewards in the long term may be much greater if we can make steemit more welcoming.
Thanks for the running tag. As to to the whole self-interest and just delegating/ not engaging does seem to defeat half the point of the platform!
You would have thought that mass adoption is going to be the most obvious thing that drives the steem price up!
Plenty to get stuck into here and it looks like a unique resource for the new age Steemer to get started with :)
Thanks for the mention at the top of the shop re: the Leagues and the witness, cheers! :D
Thanks. Took me ages to put together, there is quite a lot going on. I'd actually be most interested in your thoughts on @trufflepig - I came across it 'cos one of my recent posts got @trufflepigged, which I think is a compliment. Really one of the biz-arrest bots I've seen on here, in a good way (with a few reservations) I think.
Anyway, I think your curation leagues deserve to be top of the list, but be warned, if you check out the truffle, you might get a serious case of algorithmic inferiority!
Stuff worth compiling does take time 🙂
I've met the @trufflepig before, well done for being spotted. I'm not sure how much NLP is in place (refusing to open GitHub!), or final manual checks but they seem to be on the right path.
They don't seem to be filtering MB and SS from their non-botted top 10 either, work to do Piggy!
Oh it's a shame you can't get into it.
MB and SS? I could go look it up I suppose, unless you reply first!
minboost and shartsteemer :D
I mayyyy have a look, but you know - code!?
OK, thanks.
Code? No, not a thing. I'm one of the inferior beings here!
Also @schoolofminnows created by @lanmower, available on the @steempunks Dischord server.
Looks like you managed to miss Pimp Your Post Thursday post sharing shows which run twice on Thursdays in the Steemit Ramble Discord and hosted by @shadowspub. The shows have been running since the first week of October 2017 and have become very popular.
She also does a manual curation project called the Steemit Ramble. It's been running since August 2016
... there are two other manual curation projects also run from there by @artemisnorth. There is @fiberartists for creatives and @paddlingnature for outdoors focused posts. @artemisnorth does a creatives coffee chat on Mondays where posts are shared at times.
Wow great, thanks for adding those in! Will do an edit later next week to include them.
Thanks for putting this together.
I re-steemed.
Another initiative curating quality content is @helpie. Not strictly a curation initiative, but we do a Homesteading Curation and a Fine Art Curation with the plan to add more.
Thanks! I'm going to have to do a 'part-two'. Not all bad, give's me an easy 'lazy but useful' post for sometime next week!
I certainly wish this list had existed (and maybe it did, how would I know?) when I came on four months ago, so I honestly hope that it gets some eyes on it. I've benefited from membership in the curation and engagement leagues and a few visitations each by curie and ocd. They all definitely keep me going. The ASAPers, payitforward and the dustbuster initiative all have people behind it them that I regularly interact with (there's a lot of cross pollination going on here).
I guess mainly I want to concur with and salute you for taking the time to make the list. Until the changes in code come that bring us all peace, joy and happiness these humans will just have to get us all through. :)
Thanks for the reply. These things do tend to get lost on the chain, I benefited from a similar post (more general guidance for newbies) when I first joined - if I had the time I'd write in more detail about discord groups, that did my head in a little bit back last summer, quite comfortable there now.
Yup - cross pollination... hopefully outwards too!
Cheers!
Karl.
The @steemitworldmap is a daily manual curation program for travellers on Steemit. We're up to our 193rd edition of our Travel Digest now.
Thanks, will add to the list in the edits in a few days!
Excellent list. Very helpful! It’s a little more obscure, but @runningproject leads a great community for runners. The side project @isotonic operates as a vote bot to help support the running project community as well.
I really have to check that out and maybe even get my runs uploaded.... now that winter's over I'm glad to be off the treadmill and back outside (I just couldn't face cold runs this winter).
Adding a couple of others....
#needleworkmonday - where creatives can share their projects (run by @crosheille and @cryptocariad)
#steemkitchen - a community where foodies can unite and share their creations (run by @freetissues - they have a Discord channel as well)
Excellent, thanks for the links!
Karl.
A very nice compendium of community efforts here... Thanks!
Re-Steemed...
😄😇😄
Why thank you kindly! Nice chatting earlier, now don't caught in a distraction loop!
Karl.
Wow, this is really useful, and thanks for taking the time to put all these initiatives together in one place!
I'm often struggling to expand my circle beyond just my basic followers but there's just SO much fakely represented trash out there.
=^..^=
I was not aware of some of these initiatives! Thank you for pointing them out...and for the positive pal mention! :D
@revisesociology - Thanks for the community curation info and tips. Gives me some hope and a place to start, cheers!
It certainly is hard to get noticed. It has been known to drive me a little crazy trying to get any kind of reward for the posts that I put time into.
You have to connect and engage, and 'click' with a few people, then SOME of them will upvote you regularly, which can help - @steembasicincome and @qurator are good for guaranteeing a few cents per post.
I think there might be something of a 50-50 rule to success on here - spend 50% of your time commenting and in discord and 50% researching and writing your own work. Something like that, assuming you're not buying votes anyway!
Wow thank you so much for including our curation team in this list of prestige manual curators. Its not easy being manual but its qorth it to hear the joy in undervalued steemians comments that they have been not only read but appreciated. Its amazing how one small upvote can make life on Steemit worth sticking around for the next one. Thanks again for featuring us. I learnt something new too.
Power up and steem on!
You're welcome! Glad you learnt something. It was a lot of effort putting that together, but definitely worth it.
Karl, this is a very well put together piece... I believe you have mentioned many of the great groups out there!... I have resteemed it for you to help you get the word out! Have a wonderful day!
Thanks! And I'm sure I noticed your name in the past winners of the comment competition! No surprise there. I might have to have a crack myself, once it's off photography, not a lot to say about that!
Yes I was lucky enough to win it once, and it is a great competition each week @danielsaori does a terrific job of getting different types of posts and encouraging people to really connect with each other!
Great post man, always good to see an expanding list of curation services here on SteemIt. The effort and attention that these curators put into their work may literally end up saving this platform from itself! Steemit must have great content at its base, or, it will continue a downward spiral into a reward pool raping venture that attracts no readers, then, dead. So, Steemians, show love to the curators, toss a little SP to their efforts when you can, make great content and let's make Steemit the place to come to for great literature, great blogs, great news and analysis, great science articles, great ...everything.
Yes, thanks, important to mention the importance of delegation to many of these projects!
I just assumed trufflepig was spam as it kept coming by my blogs to a point telling me such and such almost weekly. It just felt a little off that I somehow kept writing blogs it deemed “worthy.” As if it was just trying to tell people what they want to hear to get some upvotes. I’m still a little suspect of it I’ve had 5 visits from it. As such I never really looked into as I read a boat load of blogs 1000% better then I ever write and it was never there.
It seems genuine to me... as in there's no real money resting on it! Maybe you just tick it's algorithm boxes with your particular style of writing? It just seems to be an experiment in how to auto detect quality. The post explaining how it works is interesting reading.
But I'm not 100% myself either, so thanks for flagging it up.
Hehe perhaps it does just has a thing for my writing once a week. I never did flag it as it was a nice little thing for anyone who came down to my comment section to see and think “that comment is right.” I'll take the free help.
This post is absolutely amazing. What a comprehensive breakdown of everything that is right with this platform. I think unifying minnows, whales and everything in between is what is going to make Steemit UNDESTRUCTIBLE!
Hopefully, although it takes a lot of effort against the enormous weight of not so benevolent Capital!
This is such an extensive list of curation groups and initiatives. I'll definitely check out the ones I haven't heard of before. Thank you for taking the time to showcase these groups. Love your work!
Great List/Advice. Resteeming :)
Wow, what an extensive overview, thank you! Didn't know about the treshhold, I was wondering then where my one or two cents disappeared, good old times 😂
#busy is also a tag you can add to your list, they vote once all twelve hours, but I think it is a little overused, once I got an upvote after two days, but then again none at all.
Yes, I'm afraid those pennies now effectively do get guzzled up by the whales and dolphins.
I think with busy you need to post through busy to get an upvote? I may be wrong? And I read something somewhere about why you shouldn't post through it.... can't remember the details, so best say no more for now.
I like the interface of busy but don't like to post from there because when I write long articles in the browser, sometimes the drafts disappear when switching sites, which never happened to me on steemit.com, even when i closed the browser accidentally.
I'm not sure if you have to post from busy.org, there were times when i posted from steemit.com and got their upvote anyways with the tag. They have two upvoting bots, busy.pay and busy.org.

Hi - two good places to start are the curation leagues and the pay it forward contest - links above!
If you do not stop, your account will be rendered invisible on Steemit. Bad Steemian! Bad!@steem881 you're on the @abusereports naughty list!
