I have been working on this part of Steemit and tried different methods. I think, a mixed approach is the best one for numerous reasons already mentioned in this post:
Mixing automatic curation with manual curation. You would be able to support your favorite authors, while at the same time finding new ones when you have the time to curate posts.
For many, time is key factor so they can go for autovote. However, they will have to sacrifice on earnings in case their authors get downvotes/flagged.
