As the title of this post suggests this is my first black and white photo. Now, what does that mean exactly? Have I never done a black and white photo before? The answer is No I have done some black and white photography in the past. The reason I made this particular title is that this is the first photo that I edited specifically for black and white as I thought the simple contrast of black and white did more justice than a version with color.
I took this simple photo on a trip to Mammouth lakes and I spent some time editing it and trying different things and I just wasn't happy with it. It didn't seem to have anything special to it or feel right. I spend a few days doing this and that and finally, I gave up. I wanted to think more about how I could make this look more interesting and tell a story.
I decided I wanted to try editing it in black and white which is not as easy you might think. It's not as simple as dropping the saturation to 0 and calling it a day. Editing a photo in black and white is a whole different process and honestly not one I have much knowledge in. After a few more days of trying this and that I came up with the final result that you see below. I'm sure this could be even better but hey it's a learning process and this B/W style is still new to me.
I do think this photo works far better in black and white and it did before. Let me know what you think.
Good one!
Thank you.
