Life Span of a Cell

The life span of a cell in the human body is dictated by the length of its telomeres. Telomeres are DNA sequences located at the ends of the human chromosomes. These telomeric sequences act as a buffer zone and do not code for functional genes. As the cell divides, its telomeres get shortened. The more the cell divides the shorter the telomeres get, and this is called the cellular aging process. When the telomeres get too short, the actual coding genes, next to the telomeres, will be affected as the cell continues to divide up to a point that cell division is no longer possible, and the cell will eventually die from aging.
