30th of May 2018.
Weather forecast for wednesday and thursday was exceptional for this time of the year here in Alps, so I decided to put my Canyon on the roof of Toyota and drive north to Villach, Austria.
I planned to do 100km exploring local roads between lake Ossiach and lake Millstatt. As soon as I crossed Wurzenpass from Slovenia to Austria, weather suddenly changed from great visibility and sunny, to foggy with low ceiling clouds. I was afraid it would last for the whole day but it improved very quickly after I started my route.
Good roads with low traffic between Puch and Dobriach, took me to Millstatter See coast, where I took half an hour rest and had a beer. Sunny weather and temperatures above 25 degrees Celsius, were a great opportunity for the locals to enjoy and swim in the Millstatter lake.
After short break, I continued higher up towards mountains and reached Bad Kleinkircheim, well known winter resort, now in a complete different colors, surrounded with grass and flowers.
After Bad Kleinkircheim at 1100 meters above sea level, road took me to Gnessau where I took some water for the rest of the journey. BTW, if you cycle regulary, you certainly know that water is number one concern during long trips, especially during summer days
.
During fast downhill to Oberboden I missed the right turn to the west. Garmin Edge with topo maps is a must on this kind of journeys, so I quickly realized my mistake during fast descent, and headed back on the right course. Remote road with very low traffic in the last 20 kilometers, took me to the last part of my austrian journey - last climb to Arriach.
After Arriach, I enjoyed downhill all the way to my starting point north of Villach. Advice for the end - always park near the mall, so you can take so much needed sandwich and orange juice after ride.
