Late Winter Cycling through Baranya Vineyards

in #cycling7 years ago

Surprisingly good weather for the last day of January took me out for the first serious training in 2018. After the work I put my Canyon Endurace on the roof of my toyota and headed from Osijek towards Baranya (eastern part of continental Croatia).

Paved road through vineyards located on the southern slope of Banovo Brdo hills is ideal location for both road training and recreation due to no traffic at all.

7.5km east-west stretch can be driven in both directions thus accumulating lot of km's and total elevation gained.

Usually, I do 2 to 3 hours of training, making between 40 and 80 kilometers with over 1000 meters of altitude gained. After you get off the bike (hard training), it is recommended that you restore your glycogen reserves in form of carbohydrates as soon as possible. For that purpose, I can recommend either Kovacs Csarda (exceptionaly good fish restaurant) located in Suza (10km east of above mentioned vineyards, https://tinyurl.com/y7k7xumy) or pizzeria La Rosa in Osijek (https://tinyurl.com/y83basrx).

If you ever visit this part of the world on a bike, don't hesitate to contact me for a guided tour, bon apetit! ;-)

I have been contemplating Croatia on a bike for some time now. From what i have heard it is extremely beautiful and also not too expensive for the average bikepacker!

Agree. Plenty of different opportunities - Istria like Toscana, Velebit mountains for MTB, Adriatic coast, especialy islands for road and MTB, flatland at the east for long tours and gastronomy ;-)
