Brightening up the neighborhood

in #dahlias8 years ago (edited)

A few months ago my wife and I were at Costco picking up a few groceries, which if you know Costco then you know picking up a few things is a hard task. I browsed through the plants section as I usually do and came across all sorts of trees, plants, and flowers. My wife joined me in the aisle and noticed a bag of dinner plate dahlia bulbs. She doesn't do much gardening. I do most of it. But she really wanted to get the dahlias.

As we've walked through our neighborhood no dahlias exist. Nearby our house there's a section of land near the street that is bare and she thought we ought to plant the dahlias there and cheer up the neighborhood. We purchased the dahlia bulbs and within a few hours I had them planted on the street side and hoped for the best. I had never planted dahlias nor much of flowers. I am more a veggie and hop planting kind of guy. A few neighbors noticed some plants starting to bloom from the ground. One neighbor said to watch out for young kids walking by as they might destroy them. Another neighbor was excited to see dahlias planted because she hasn't seen dahlias in our neighborhood. That neighbor even gave me tips on nurturing the dahlias. Then another elderly neighbor told me that he noticed dahlias growing and said that everyday he goes out for a short walk just to see how the dahlias are doing. It feels like this cheering up of the neighborhood is working.

This evening before the sun went down we went to go check on the dahlias and looky here at this two-toned flower. Such a beauty!
