Every year before the Day of Chinese New year begins, There's always a reunion dinner to look forward to. It's a like the Chinese thanksgiving dinner.
We call it the 30th night when directly translated from Chinese to English.
Everyone would flock back to our home town to meet old friends, relatives for a mandatory (only if you're Chinese) assembly.
But Really...
But we all know the real reason why we're all back home for the festive season, and it's in the color RED! But in this case it's GOLD!
This Packet was given to me by my aunt. She's the cool aunt that gives out fancy angpao every year! Is this one of the fanciest angpao's you have seen? #angpao2018
Not The Only Reason
Chinese New Year to a lot of Chinese means a lot! It's about connecting back to your roots, the culture and the tradition.
We follow some crazy stuff during the holidays like:
You're not supposed to clean the house on the first day, supposed meaning is that you will sweep away your fortune but start your year by overhauling your entire house.
1st day of the New Year is strictly family time, the third day is when you can freely do house visitations.
Eat fish to signify you having plenty for the year;
You're supposed to treat your guests right.
With Food.
So yes, Chinese New year is not the time to be hungry!
So I spend a lot of quality time with my family doing a lot of chores and preparations in case people come and visit. One of it is making prawn crackers. I find it fascinating enough to want to share with you guys the process.
It went from this
to this!
Oh and my dad would spend time making an old family recipe; Kudat egg rolls!
Homemade Egg rolls! I would've taken photo of the makings of it but apparently it's a family secret...
Oh and apologies as this is the only photo of the homemade egg rolls. I got too excited that I swept through the dish in quick succession without bothering about how the photo looked.
At least this one the egg rolls look good!
My Mum opted for a more healthy approach so don't get weird-ed out by the black thing on the plate, it's just brown rice... err.. i mean... black .. rice?
My Favourite's the chewy chicken! A staple for every chinese reunion dinner meal!

Very interesting learning about your new year traditions and the food looks good too!!
Thank you for sharing 😊
Those abalone slices, egg rolls and crackers can't be missed! Was it minced beef or meat in the egg rolls?
Have a Wonderful new year!
You're right! I can't be missed but I guess I'm just fortunate enough to be able to still experience this!
The inside the egg rolls is pork but specially grounded "kudat" style it's home made cause it was grounded with just only a pair of butcher knives! A lot of work done really :)
You have a great new year too my friend!
Haha. No worries I eat like u too during CNY. Eat 1st a shed the fat later. hehe. Eh I never heard of the kudat eggroll? and the food on the table really makes me hungry.
Hahaha yes yes! Not even sorry for eating so much hehe!
Kudat is a small town in Sabah. Yea, it's pretty rural xD
