I think that depends on every individual. You need to be physically and mentally prepared (well in shape and able to align your focus with many things at the same time), have a good body control and balance, learn to hold your breath (since you will be much time under water) and learn to "read" the waves (the last one is the one that needs most time). To me the "hardest" part was the physical training. My arms were not very well trained when I started and I got tired soon. Now I can paddle during hours.
