By definition, every scientist is a data scient. Data Science involves hacking, analyzing, and using data to build products and find insights. When converted into job roles, data scientists can be exemplified as AI Hardware Specialists, Software Engineers, and Data Engineers. By building AI software and creating new tech, data scientists have the opportunity to change the world. Between just 2011 and 2012, job listings for “data scientists” increased 15,000%. Although the field is a recent trend, the idea isn’t new. In fact, it has been on a journey to the mainstream for almost 3 centuries.
Data Science dates back to the 1740s with Bayes’ Theorem stating that your initial belief combined with new data results in an improved belief. This is the basis for probability calculations that power artificial intelligence today. In 1996, “data science” appeared for the first time at the International Federation of Classification Societies in Japan. By 2010, “data science had fully infiltrated the common vernacular. Since then, data science has had no plans of slowing down. This year, the openings for data scientist jobs will cross of 2.7 million.
By 2025, 175 billion terabytes of data will be created on a daily basis. In 2013, IBM revealed that 90% of the world’s data was created in the last 2 years. To find more information on data science, check out the infographic below.
