This time helping out a local eco food store with building and designing furniture. On this post we will look at a table made out of three beech timber logs, joined together with the old traditional butterfly techniqe.
We ended up with four different oak butterfly joints, cut out by hand and burnt at a local workshop. Oak is a strong material which can hold massive weight together and also resist water damage. Fun fact: The vikings used oak to build their ship, which is the reason for Norways lack of this type of wood. The concept of the butterfly used in this table is to hold the timber together. One important detail is to remember to have the fiber of the timber and the oak butterflies in cross direction. If not the butterfly would easily crack.
After a little struggle with cutting out the form of the butterflies in the beech timber, which by the way requires a high skill level in precision, i planed the surface and oiled the table. Heres the result! If you ever travel to Bergen, Norway visit Råvarene, a local eco food store.
That's amazing, you are very talented, upvoted and followed.
It seems like a great, beautiful, sturdy construction.
