Weimar Republic President Paul von Hindenburg appointed Adolph Hitler Chancellor even though the Nazis were only a small minority in the German government. On his first day as chancellor, Hitler manipulated Hindenburg into dissolving the Reichstag and calling for the new elections he had wanted - to be held on March 5, 1933.
