The musician in me (classical piano, orchestration & composition at university level) has been trained toward harmony - the resolution of dissonance to a satisfying harmonic conclusion. The writer in me loves the political edge of Steemit and the ability to engage with an audience which is edgy and both appreciates and rewards my voice. While the entrepreneurial mom in me is seeking always to reduce interruption, reduce online notifications and cut down idle screen time so I can be more "productive".
And so, as I have been finding my steem-feet, the option of discord came up. Initially I was anti. My phone is already full of apps eating every G of memory, my laptop usually has at least 12 tabs open and I want to interface less with that world, not more. But my good friend @kenistyles (our Steemit Mastermind Group guru and leader) is a discord devotee. Talking with him about how to use steem, I quickly grasped how much more lucrative steem could be for me if I could react and engage promptly. Which meant I needed a notification system to save me hours of online trawling, which meant discord. And my trusty staffer, GINAbot.
The arrival of GINAbot into my world was not without incident. Haha. You can read about that here: https://steemit.com/ginabot/@artemislives/who-needs-sex-toys-when-you-have-a-bot-named-gina
But she's here to stay and although she doesn't make coffee, she HAS made my steem experience so much smoother, efficient and, yes, lucrative. Albeit still in a newbie-tiny-pay-out-kinda-way.
And so here we are, also moving house and business this week. Time is being squeezed and a few corners are having to be cut and I simply haven't had time to explore all the little features of what discord can do. And so "the noise" has just stayed on its 'factory setting'.
The first night my daughter looked up. "Mama, what's that noise?" And it was discord, blipping away semi-quietly in the corner of the room. The second and third nights it irritated me, frankly, and I made a mental note to create a window of time to turn off the audible sound. And then a few days passed as we have been packing and running hard, and it didn't happen.
And then last night, the pivot point came.
I was sitting in the living room with my daughter, sorting papers and packing boxes. And it was blipping.
"Hey, mama - it's like an alarm to tell you you made some money!" said my 13 year old daughter, who is preparing to start on steem herself. "Is that $1 every time it blips?"
"Haha no, sweetie... probably half or 1 cent each time you hear it. Mama is still getting her steem mojo happening."
And so we started laughing every time it blipped. 1. 2. no, 3 cents. haha, 4!
As we packed and chuckled and worked companionably, it struck me that the discord 'noise' is like a meditation bell in a world of chaos. While the Messenger, Facebook, Instagram et al notification noises are about not missing out, being endlessly online and being summoned back to the screen to give a little more of yourself away for free, the discord blip is literally gently giving me an affirmation that my time has value and my energy is rewarded.
And so, for now, I have decided to leave the noise on. To focus my attention on that energy of creation being rewarded. Of my time being worth something. When it goes quiet, as it has a bit this evening, I am reminded that it is my active choice to engage which stimulates the responses and rewards. And so after posting this, I will check out my feed to see who's 'out there' posting and giving.
The irritation of the discord notification "blips" has given way to a whole new harmonious appreciation of choosing to ENJOY being reminded that what I am doing is working, that people are reading and commenting and upvoting.
Not using discord or GINAbot yet? Think about it - I have found it a great move. And if I can navigate the technicalities (albeit with a little online hand-holding) and get it happening, anyone can.
Gratitude to our Steemit Mastermind Group, encouraged and led by @kenistyles and for the upvotes and comments of my last post https://steemit.com/manifesting/@artemislives/barbie-korean-rap-and-the-banana-guru from @eftnow @hungryhustle @iliasdiamantis @ekavieka @karinxxl @happyphoenix @lovelivinglife @hispeedimagins @lifeisgood7 @neilur @sourceoftruth and @beekerst
Love that you are making a choice to see the noise as, "An affirmation that my time has value and my energy is rewarded." I am enjoying your posts and thank you for the useful tips!
Appreciating your support - everything is a choice. :)
Driven by enthusiasm, I had activated too many Gina's alarms ... after two or three weeks of high-frequency blip blip, I decided to remove unnecessary alarms, LOL!
Thanks for your nice post, @artemislives... have a nice day!
haha... you made me smile... thanks for your support. :)
Oh yeah, it's funny!
Would you like to try?
(I suggest you set your phone to sleep mode during the night, avoiding sounds or vibration, LOL)
Yes, all data is switched off when I rest and sleep for deeeeep rest and better health. :)
Although I haven't used Ginabot because I discovered discord very recently. But I think today is the day I am going to explore it.
I have been avoiding using it because when I see something new on Steemit or related to that, it takes up my whole day to fully understand it. Haha! Today I have ample amount of time. @artemislives, thanks for another great post. Cheers!
Prashant, you're gonna LOVE it and you seem WAAAAAY more tech savvy than me, so it's gonna be easy for you. Makes everything tighter, more responsive and more productive. Thanks for the juicy upvote. :)
I will check it out and let you know the results through my next post, maybe. Haha!
Wish you more juicy upvotes. :-)
I just posted a step by step Ginabot tutorial post today, however you may not see this comment. If you had Ginabot, you would moving forward. Reach out if you need assistance, but the tutorial WILL get you there. :)
I will have a look at your guide @sourceoftruth. I see all of my comments because I check my Steemdb page frequently for all the activities I do on the blockchain. I guess @ginabot will make me aware about the activities happening to me.
After you have a taste for juicy upvotes, you feel INSPIRED to create your OWN juice!! :)
Yup, Discord rocks. I love the bips too.
Sounds like I ought to have a look at the Gina bot. have you still got the link anywhere?
Minnow-power (Gina's place) https://discord.gg/FNDD2CN
Gina bot is great, Sam, and gonna really help you target much more closely and engage well with your people. Highly recommended.
I've trying for months to chat on Discord. Guess I am not a chat person. I mainly use it for GINA .
I find the post promotion in the discord thread much easier to use. And I like the HELP channel. The general chat thread is great to stay in the loop, as we have committed to support one another.
Ginabot rocks. Right now she tells me every time someone makes a post tagged with #autism. :)
She is also how I found your post at 3 minutes!
I think there is a way to turn off notifications when your going to bed. I will do some research. It reminds me a lot of the bling bling sound on shopify when you get an order. The sound becomes addictive (then annoying haha.)
Using Gina bot to notify you when anyone hashtags #autism is SERIOUSLY smart. Cos that's how we find and engage with the people doing great things in our field of interest. And those people always inspire engagement. I'm gonna think on that some and set up a few of those too! Nice pro tip.
haha... yes, I LIKE the shopify "cha-ching" and I'm enjoying the reminder that what I put out there is being rewarded. I close my laptop lid when I go to sleep, and that stops the noise, but I am sure after I am moved in the coming days I will have time to learn more about Gina and Discord. It's adding a LOT of value to my steem world. :)
I'm glad it's so helpful to you. I'm going to be experimenting with ways to use it like for contests with a hashtag and for curating. The devs are nice too and love suggestions to make it better.
I had help from no less than GOD when I activated Gina. So yes, am very aware of the dev's helpfulness and accessibility. https://steemit.com/ginabot/@artemislives/who-needs-sex-toys-when-you-have-a-bot-named-gina In case you missed it. :)
Haha that is so cool! Realizing you are earning at that point.
Eventuallt I am sure you are gonna turn of the bleeb once you are a steemit hero ;)
haha.. I'm sure you're right - look fwd to having that problem!! "A steemit Hero" ... hmmm... pencil that onto her aspirations list. :)

I love those little blips too. 3 AM and BLING, the phone lights up and that pleasant little sound goes off across the room. I fluff the pillow and resist the urge to get up and check to see if it was my friend on the far side of the planet commenting on my recent post! HA!
haha... I don't allow discord on my phone and my boudoir is my sanctuary!! I turn off the data in my phone when I rest-sleep and close the lid of my laptop (in another room) so I have blip-free few hours. But SOOOO NICE to be having coffee (as I am now) and scrolling through Gina's incredible activity while I slept. :)
I love gina but sometimes i get overwhelmed. Gotta figure out how to stop getting notifications of posts by antifeminists 🤦🏼♀️😬💩😒😝
Urgh! The struggle is real. On the upside, that you are on the anti-fem radar means you ARE DOING SOMETHING RIGHT and getting your pro voice out there. :) That matters. FOLLOWING you and looking fwd to learning from you. :) Best from Thailand.
@teamgirlpowa is The main focus. I should post more lol.
Yes, you should. See? I am now stalking your comments in my determination to upvote something of yours, Lima! :-/
Tonight!!! I willl!!!!
This is such a cool perspective, and a very sweet thought! I tend to close Discord when I'm not actively engaging, just to conserve bandwidth, but when I have it open now I'll try to bring this mindset to it as well—it makes things feel so much nicer. ❤️
Hmmm.... I never worry about conserving bandwidth but probably I should - my 13 year old daughter always rolls here eyes when she sees the 15 apps all open on my phone. I need to nerd up a little. :)
My internet connection just isn't what it could be, alas, and running Discord in the background slows things down. I need to clean out my laptop, probably—sweep out the detritus, uninstall apps I just don't use, ect.
More VERY useful information. @ginabot is so helpful, I couldn't imagine not having her. And the Discord app IS and will be extermely helpful for us a s a group moving forward. Thanks you for sharing this with everyone. <3 🙏
Thanks Jeff. Now that I am getting the hang of the various discord channels it's getting easier to support the SMG core, and saving me a lot of time and distraction. Thanks for your consistent support.
You're welcome and Thank you as well. I'm considering doing a Discord walk through tutorial using my screenshare video option, although today in my Ginabot tutorial post (inspired in part by you), I posted a "Discord For Dummies" youtube video link. So, we're getting it going here. Who would have though a month ago we'd have "bots" assisting us with our work? LOL 🙏
