Coconut oil is a popular base for homemade toothpaste - this is how I use it:
With a clean spoon I transfer some solid state coconut oil (as opposed to liquid / melted) onto my toothbrush, then sprinkle that with a pinch of baking soda.
That's it!
The coconut oil is known to have its own benefits, but it's the baking soda that neutralizes odors. This formula will leave your mouth clean, but not minty fresh. For minty fresh, you can sprinkle a small amount of ground, fresh mint over the layer of baking soda, or just chew on a couple of fresh mint leaves after your brushing routine.
Compared to what you could spend on toothpaste, coconut oil and baking soda are far more affordable by volume. Note that coconut oil has a shelf life that can be impacted by how you store it, so buying a giant tub for one person might lead to more waste than savings.
how does that taste? they said on the news today coconut oil should only be used externally
It tastes like coconut - and I don't swallow it, I use it just like regular toothpaste, spit it out, and rinse.
OK makes sense. I tried the deflavored coconut oil once to swish in my mouth and it was disgusting.
You get used to it - but that's why I mentioned the bit about fresh mint. Try that next time.
Sure why not!
Interesting did they give any reasons for it?
I couldn't find anything that said coconut oil shouldn't be used internally - anybody else have any luck? Even so, I'm not advocating you eat the stuff by the spoon full, I'm saying to use it as a base for toothpaste and to spit it out when you're done.
Interesting OK! I haven't found anything like that either! I used it on my hair and skin today!!
Thanks for sharing this useful information!!! Very interesting, have you maybe tried adding cinnamon?
No I haven't but I'd love to know if anyone else has!
Yeah me too!!!
