One of the upsides of living in the northern hemisphere is that you can make ice lanterns in the wintertime. My neighbour beat me to it and already had three ice lanterns with candles burning inside by the time I was starting mine.
It’s only a few degrees below zero but consistantly, so while it takes a good few days for a bucket of water to freeze, it’s very doable. I was thinking of making only a couple buckets where you don’t let it freeze completely through so I can but a candle inside, and then a huge amount of cubes to form a big circle.
I might even make a castle or something insane because if I start now and make new ones regularly for the next few months, I’m gonna have a lot of building material. Here most grocery stores give away these candy boxes for free and I need to pick up more so I can make bigger batches at once. Patience is not my strong suit.
On the topic of patience, I was too quick to tip over the first bucket and ended up with a very thin lantern. It was quite pretty though and the candle burned surprisingly all night in it.
Very artistic, and very cool @eveuncovered 👍
Oh yes much art, all the creativity…
Oh yes :D
This won't work so well down here, but I'll put some ice in my drinks, does that count?
I think that is an excellent alternative!
I thought to, especially considering how hot it'll get here soon.
I don't know. This might be a neat project for the library, but there is no guarantee the weather will cooperate. I plan to start a monthly craft day though, so if the weather cooperates, maybe it'll be worth a shot as a spontaneous project?
I think people would love that if the weather complies!
It can be a very authentic decoration tool on winter nights.
Definitely, I’m sure people have been making these for centuries.
That is sooo awesome and real coool!! This is my first time witnessing this ice lantern. Good job!
wow! I've never seen one of those before! Really cute :)
I know right, simple and cute :)
I also like the vintage cars you shared in the picture. I hope one of them will be mine in the future.
Dude, wrong post.
I am sorry. I'm just getting used to writing comments on the system
I am now. This is the first time I've ever seen Ice Lanterns.
But first, we need to get back below zero again. There's a chance we might have a green Christmas.... 😒
Really, never? It says here you live in Ottawa, you have a proper good winter in there don’t you?
We are usually below freezing from December until April with a few days around -40.
So, we can definitely make them. I've simply never seen them. I think that's about to change. :)
When I look at this post, I'm just smiling and nodding a bit while saying "Ice.."
