DIY Woodworking - Birch, Pine, and Ohia Shelf for Our Tiny House Bathroom - Big Island Hawaii

We had some left over wood from building our boxes and table. We felt we need to have a place to put our stuff when we take a shower. We didn't have enough wood to make a box then we got an idea to use some of the wood that was lying on the side of the roads.

We drove up a little ways and looked for some deadfall from the Ohia Tree. Our area is not affected by the rapid Ohia death fungus so we felt it was safe to take. Plus there is no Ohia down at sea level where we are.

We never worked with wood directly from a tree before.

We found a couple pieces and drove back to the Tiny House. We debarked the wood and started to sand it. The Ohia wood is a beautiful dark color.

Once we sanded it we put on a couple coats of Shellac sanding between each coat.

We only had enough left over Birch plywood to make the top and bottom shelf. We finished the edges with left over pine from the pallet. Then we sanded everything down and put on one coat of our poly stain.

Then we screwed and glued up the Ohia to the top and bottom. We added feet that we made from live edge Ohia branches but you can't see that in the picture.

Once that dried we sanded it smooth with 400 grit. We were running out of time before we had to go back to Oahu so we used Shellac as the finish coats.

We were pretty happy with how it turned out.
