What is Aquaponics? Growing Food at Home

Hydroponics is the art of growing plants without soil, in water and is a great way to start growing your own food at home as simple systems take up very little space and it is very cheap and sustainable and reduces your supermarket dependency, but you do need to add nutrients to the water to help growth.

Hydroponics takes this one step further by using fish in a small reservoir to basically poo and provide the nutrients for the plants. Of course, you need to feed the fish but when they grow up, you can eat them! Win-win.

In all seriousness, these are both excellent methods of providing your own food, even if you live in a small house or apartment.

These systems can be as simple or complex, large or small and cheap or expensive as your budget and space allow and you get the amazing satisfaction of eating your own, home-grown, clean produce.

Many definitions of aquaponics recognize the ‘ponics’ part of this word for hydroponics which is growing plants in water with a soil-less media. Hydroponics is its own growing method with pros and cons.
