You may have seen my not so recent video of me unboxing my new mavic pro. As a new drone owner, I realized there is a lot to learn as a drone pilot! I’ve tried on several occasions to take my drone out for a “first flight,” but have found that it doesn’t always work out as planned.
Fourth time’s a charm- haha! I finally flew my drone, and it was pretty awesome although short lived due to battery life!
So a bit about why those other times did not work out so well.
-1st try - Drones were banned at the state lake. I found out when I called the park office to verify since their website did not specify.
-2nd try - Took it to the park - ended up being way too windy. It didn’t look so windy when I looked through the window!
-3rd try - Packed it with me to Joshua Tree and planned on filming outside of the park at the gypsy trailer. Unfortunately, drones are not allowed in National Parks. But if you guys saw my post regarding staying in the tiny home, it was also a crazy wind/dust storm kind of day, so it was a no go indoors afternoon. Check out my post here if you are interested in tiny homes!
And that brings us to today’s short video! :) Still getting used to the controllers and trying to learn about the different functions since you only have a short amount of flight time before the battery drains. My drone is charging up as we speak. Thanks for stopping by, what do you think of the footage? I feel like there is so much potential, if I can find the right conditions and places to fly! Any tips drone pilots? I will also be writing a post about some of the interesting things I learned about drones.

My video is at DLive
This is great! I see your video was used with the app editor, isn't it great?!
Like I said earlier... extra batteries are clutch. And you'd be surprised to see how well the Mavic holds up in those high winds. The warning that displays is a warning yes, to be cautious. But for all the times I have taken my Mavic up in wind, it holds fine. AS long as the GPS signal is strong and your craft is "well oiled" you could say.
Your flight skills will improve dramatically with practice, can't wait to see more!
hahah yeah!! I popped into to the app to see my footage and it made a video I only had to tweak a little. That's awesome, I didnt realize you can fly in higher winds. I really still need to practice tho haha and just go ahead and order that extra battery! Might as well, because I know I am already seeing the usefulness. OO so one issue that had me baffled and concerned was that it disconnected several times during the flight (but I had only flown it right over our area not very far). I googled it later and it was said possibly the usb was not connected well. Is that probably so?
Yea if your phone has a case on it the plug can slip out often. Does on my iphone 8 all the time. In most cases you should be able to simply plug it back in and it reconnect.
I think it's a very good record, but I've never learned about dron. I will learn from your post. Good luck always for you @polebird. 😊👍
thank you! :)
You are welcome my friend 😊.
Now I think I want to fly one soon.
heheh it's an interesting and nerve wracking feeling!
Oh yea how sweaty my palms get flying somewhere new for the first time....
@awesomianist is working as a drone pilot. So maybe he has some tips?
ahh awesome thank you for letting me know! will check out his blog :) oo i feel like maybe i exchanged a few words with him before on steemit
You are welcome :)
I don't think his blog has anything that are related to drone piloting but feel free to contact him :D
And yes maybe you have exchanged some words with him bcos we are both your faaaaan!!! :D
There you go again with the sweet puppy..thanks for sharing beauty with us always @polebird. Resteemed
thank you my friend!
This really cool. How high can the mavic fly? Your hubby and Kylie looked small due to the distance.
The video quality is nice too.
The max per regulations is 400 feet, but it has the ability to fly much higher than that! thank you :) I ended up choosing this particular model for its video quality :)
Wow. That is quite high.
wow! drone!!! good
Cool. Will have to get a drone one of these days. It looks a nice little unit .
Yeah! It has so much potential. Pretty cool how small it is :)
Hey @polebird - Looks like we bought the same drone :) - I almost got in trouble for flying in a 'no-fly-zone' here in HK a few weeks ago due to some very ambiguous info, but managed to duck that bullet :/ Excited to see more 👍🏻
Nice! I’m excited to check out your footage! It’s pretty cool but I haven’t gotten to play too much with it just with how many things have to be considered! Glad you didn’t get in trouble, I worry about that too 😅
I know what you mean ... much to learn. I also had a dreaded 'fly away' on one of my first flights. Had to do with magnetic interference re the compass calibration. The drone literally flew away over a mountain. I thought, 'shit!' The return to home button wasn't kicking in and I thought I'd lost it...until..thankfully the auto RTH did work and it came back...yikes 🤯
The video doesn't look bad for a first timer. :) My dad is planning to buy a drone too. HAHA :D Because he also wants to take videos with it. I don't know why but he seem to really want to get one. :D
Hahah because it’s pretty cool to see from birds eye view! Or at least in my opinion hehhe Thank you!
Oh yeah, it is.. Hehe :)
Awesome! Wait till you play with the active track!! ;)
Haha Ooo !! Just launching it is exciting!
Congrats on your first flight Captain Jessica:))
Thank you! Hahha I like the sound of that :)
Great choice, perfect travel drone! You'll be hitting max altitude in no time ;) I always think 3 batteries and a car charger and you can shoot as long as you want, can never have too many batteries! I was nerdy enough to label each battery when I had a drone!
Lol!! I barely flew it like 20 feet I think :P You just reminded me, and so I just placed an order for an extra battery! Will probably get that car charger too :P What a good idea to label it :) any other tips or tricks for me?
