No one can tell for sure what is the future of a particular cryptocurrency. What we can do is try to evaluate the potential value of a coin in the middle and long term based on various metrics such as market capitalization, community strength, developer activity, trading volume, cost to 51% attack the coin among other things.
On CoinGecko.com (at time of writing), which tracks all these various metrics, Dogecoin is ranked the #2 cryptocurrency after Bitcoin. Dogecoin has the second strongest community after Bitcoin based on Reddit subscriber count, Facebook Likes, Twitter followers. Dogecoin has taken on a leading role in the still nascent online "tipping" ecosystem and you can see a lot of tipping on the Dogecoin subreddit at /r/dogecoin and the Twitter tip bot at tipdoge.info.
Dogecoin also has one of the most active developer team with many contributors and code updates. Many people in the Dogecoin dev community has raised issues on Github to improve the Dogecoin codebase. It is also one of the coins which have the most liquidity and trading volume.
That being said, Dogecoin is the first coin that really innovated based on their marketing initiatives and is very active in organising marketing and charity drives. It has sponsored Josh Wise in the NASCAR race and the efforts of the community to continuously reach out to more people is helping to get more people interested in Dogecoin. The price might be low at this point but given solid fundamentals, it has a very bright future.
