The American Bulldog is a utility dog breed. It is a stocky, well built, strong-looking dog, with a large head and a muscular build. Its coat is short and generally smooth. They are heavy-boned—yet they are quick on their feet. Their powerful, bulky heads have box-like muzzles, black or brown noses and furrowed brows. Their ears can be up or hanging. They got strong necks, broad chests and long, muscular legs. American Bulldogs have short, coarse coats that can come in combinations of solid white colors and variations of white with patches of other colors.
Taller, faster and leaner than their English Bulldog counterparts, the American Bulldog weight up to 107 pounds and grow up to a height of 27 inches.
Originally used in the 17th century for bull baiting—a cruel betting sport in which dogs fought bulls in a ring. When bull baiting was banned in 1835, Bulldogs were bred to be kinder, heavier and more tamed. However, American Bulldogs—which were brought to the U.S. before this breeding pattern—retained the size and strength of the original fighting Bulldogs.
Though they are known for their pleasant and friendly demeanor, they can also exhibit some ‘stubbornness’ as they are very confident. This breed was also used as a working farm utility dog that could catch and hold cattle and wild boar, kill vermin, and guard the owner’s property.
