If you don't know what 7-11 is just imagine a chain of minimarts that are literally everywhere. 7-11 has some competition in the minimart marketplace but not really. They dominate the game here in Thailand. It is also a place where you can count on there being stray dogs at the entrance basically anywhere in the country.
I suppose this is because the dogs have learned that this is a safe place to sleep as any fights will be broken up by the people there and there is also some chance for some affection and a bit of food.
Recently we were contacted by a 7-11 staff member about and old dog that is there all the time who came back one day and is now injured. This dog had become a bit of a fixture around the 7-11 and the staff feed him and look after him. I suppose you could say that we are both honored that they would know to call us for help and also a bit annoyed that they didn't take it upon themselves to help him.
Over the phone all they could tell us was that he was bleeding and looked like he needed help. When we arrived we found a very calm pooch who was licking his wounds and actually started wagging his tail despite the fact that he was almost certainly in pain, when we approached. We were very afraid to touch him because we do not know the demeanor of this dog despite the tail wag. We were able to lure him away to a vet to get fixed up and the vet actually muzzled him before working on his leg. He didn't like this very much but also didn't protest at all during the procedure and just kind of laid down and enjoyed the belly rubs that we were giving to calm him down.
In the end he only needed a few stitches and we also treated him for parasites which we was absolutely covered in. He was back at the 7-11 the same day
You may recall that in the past I have told that we have taken on more cancer patients than we can possibly handle at the moment and therefore we asked the vet to please not even check for it because we won't be able to help him even if he needs it. This is the sad reality of our situation right now. We simply cannot take on any big projects at the moment due to lack of funds.
Little things like this, it would be nice of the communities where we find these animals would take it upon themselves to sort things like this out rather than call us and expect us to pay for it. In the end it was only about $15 total which doesn't seem like much for an individual because it isn't but when you multiply this by the hundreds of animals we help every month that number can quickly spiral out of control.
I wish the local media / government would give us a hand in the form of education. We don't need a handout (although that would be very welcome as well) but I really feel like the local community and perhaps the country as a whole really doesn't know as much about this situation as they should.
It's frustrating but we were happy to help this old boy out anyway. Not only is his leg doing just dandy, but he now can live the next 3 months parasite free!

It sure is a mixture of feelings in one way they should of sorted this out themselves but if they for some reason didn't know what to do it's good that they called you guys.
yeah, while we are happy to help it would be nice if the people understood that we are not a government funded organization and little things like this really should be handled by the people themselves. We will always help as much as we can though!
Wow! nice to know that strays are taken care of this way. True it would be wonderful if the communities themselves bear the expenses but I guess not many people are interested.
poor dog☹
