Biotechnology (3): Eve, the first human cloning

BMC - The superhuman will probably soon come true. The world will not lack the stock of superhuman geniuses like Albert Einsten or Stephen Hawking, or a classy athlete like Carl Lewis or a sensual actress Jennifer Lopez. Super humans will remain sustainable on earth. 100% exactly the same, the only difference is its generation. The advancement of science and technology, especially in the field of genetic engineering has eliminated the unbelief. Through cloning technology, anyone can be duplicated.

Clonaid, a Biotechnology company in the Bahamas, successfully produced the world's first human cloning with the birth of Eve, December 26, 2002. Eve was the first baby born from 10 implants performed by Clonaid in 2002. Of the 10 implants, five failed. Four other cloned babies will be born this year. Clonaid plans to implant 20 human clones this January. At the same time, independent experts will be invited to see the process so they can see how cloning, embryo growth and implantation are. Now Eve, 6 years old, is healthy and is now beginning to step on a Kindergarten education in the suburbs of the Bahamas.

Clonaid is a company founded by the Raelians religious sect of 1997. They believe in life on earth created by outer space through genetic engineering.

Concerning the concerns of many about the imperfections of cloned animals in models for human cloning, Broisselier, chief executive of the Clonaid, insisted the two procedures were incommensurable. Problems arising in animal cloning are the result of specific procedures that scientists use to reproduce animals. So not on the cloning process. In addition, if in the cloning process Clonaid researchers detect any abnormality, the fetus will be aborted.

Brigitte Boisselier added that scientific evidence will be submitted soon, so that they are not considered to have made up stories. So the only way is to invite an independent expert to the baby's parent. There he can take samples of cells from infants and mothers, to then compare them.

Raelian is so far known as a religious sect that believes that life in outer space has created life on earth. The group, which received official recognition by the state government of Quebec, Canada, as a religious movement in the 1990s claimed 55,000 members worldwide, including the United States. The group has a public park called UFOland, near Montreal.

The first human cloning (Eve) was a success of Western scientists in exploiting science that ultimately made a rapid advance that had exceeded all human predictions. Imagine, this way is regarded as a way to improve the quality of offspring: more intelligent, strong, beautiful, or to multiply offspring without the need for conventional reproductive processes.

Cloning research in humans actually also provides hope for the future of medicine. Cloning techniques enable doctors to identify the causes of spontaneous abortion, providing an understanding of the rapid growth of cancer cells, the use of stem cells to regenerate neural networks, advances in the study of aging, genetics and treatment problems.

The dark side of Cloning

The birth of the first human cloned Eve was a surprise. Previously scientists prepared to accept the birth of the first cloned baby 'masterpiece' Italian fertility expert, Dr. Severino Antinori, early January 2003. Antinori is an expert fertility expert. He has declared his success in clotting pigs and primates and successfully breaching conventional fertility procedures by getting a pregnant woman at the age of 62 in 1994.

Most scientists agree, human reproduction by cloning is possible. But they stress, such experiments can not be accounted for because of the high risk of death and postnatal disorders.

Roslin's Institute scientist Ian Wilmut, who plays a role in Dolly's birth affirms, the first human cloning is shocking because of the high number of failures and deaths in newborns. cloning in animals indicates a weakness. Dolly, the first successful mammal to be cloned proved to be suffering from arthritis at a young age.

The sheep are cloned by the technique of cloning the transfer of somatic cell nuclei (body cells). Dolly DNA comes from a single cell taken from its parent egg cell which is then fused with a 'mammary' cell (mammary gland cells). The cells that have joined develop into an embryo which is then implanted in the womb of a substitute parent sheep. Although it is said to be successful, this cloning procedure is not perfect. 227 attempts before Dolly was finally created.

The National Bioethics Advisory Commission suggests, the use of animals to understand biological processes as in the Dolly case, gives great hope for the future of the medical world in the future. But there is no justification for research with the aim of producing human children through this technique. This is because, it is said, cloning in humans is more complicated with big risk and very potential error. Scientists worry, the use of this technique in humans will lead to malformations (deformity or disability).

Referring to these risks many countries prohibit the conduct of cloning research in humans. US President Bill Clinton issued a recommendation moratorium or cessation of human cloning research for 5 years. Almost all religions also prohibit cloning technology in humans.

Departing from the advantages and disadvantages of cloning technology, clerics, political experts, legal experts and community experts need to formulate rules on the application of cloning technology. Because in the hands of 'black' scientists, cloning can be a disaster.
