I'm not on my smartphone a lot, especially in the morning, unless someone is calling or texting me first thing. That sometimes happens, but not very often. Otherwise, I'm not surfing around on it, or checking notifications, playing games, looking at the News or Facebook, or whatever other people do.
However, I am on my computer, mostly on the Internet all day. The majority of that time is spent on STEEM or one of the dApps like dpoll, so I'm trying to be somewhat productive rather than wasting my time, as you described it.
I think I'm at the age though, where I didn't have a mobile phone, let alone a smart one, to get into the habit of looking at when I was younger, so it's a fairly simple thing to just pick it up when I need it and put it down when I don't.
I also leave it in my home office charging at night, so it's not on a nightstand next to the bed when I wake up. I do look at it to see if I have any messages from the time I left it the previous evening to the morning, just in case.
