I think what hurt the movie from the getgo was that no backstory was given about his heavy French accent. Perhaps his American parents were stationed in France where he was raised something like that would helped soften the fact that this pro American soldier sounded anything but American.

Being a big fan of the arcade series and Guile, he was the first character I gravitated to when STREET FIGHTER 2 hit the local arcades in my neighborhood. So if I had a choice to do a recast, I certainly wouldn't have gone with JCVD even with his star power at that time. I would have gone with an unknown and someone in his early 40s. Someone like Josh Brolin would look and fit the part, but fighting wise, hmm... that's a whole 'nother animal to do deal with...
