I've only played a handful of FF games and I am pretty sure in all of them the main protagonist is a male 17yo XD The exception was X-2 (which I didn't play that much of as it was during one of the many transitioning phases in my life) where it may have been an early 20s female (because I can't remember how much time was supposed to have passed between X and X-2, but given the addiction to teenage characters she may have been 18-19 XD).
I tend not to care about people's opinions of games if most of their whining is about how the main characters look or what kind of relationships are available XD

Yep, teenager male protagonist is rampant in JRPG, sometimes they put female ones too, though not as often. On the other hand, the lead character in Western games is usually a mature guy with short/bald hair. Kinda funny that.
I try to ignore negative people too. There are too many of them around, it is exhausting for me to be around them.
