I visited a naturopath recently for various reasons.
you know the typical ones like stress, fatigue, coffee addiction..
"wait, hold the phone? Coffee addiction?
-I can already hear the coffee enthusiasts packing their laptops and heading to their favourite cafe to buy a machiato and write their rebuttal. -
But hey hey - hear me out
Coffee addiction is maybe a little dramatic, but I do drink to much for it to be good for my overall health.
and no, I am most certainly not against coffee, but it most definitely shouldn't replace a wonderful glass of water.
WHY?
Though coffee does have some health benefits to it, it also slows down or prevents other processes in the body.
Coffee can effect the body's ability to absorb/store minerals such as iron, zinc and magnesium as well as b, c and e-vitamin. This is especially true if we drink a cup of coffee with a meal, like for example breakfast.
Osteoporosis has also been linked to coffee, amongst other things.
To say i'd give up the joe forever, would probably be a big fat lie.
But I did need to find an alternative to my morning coffee, because it was starting to cause problems in my daily life.
and WAHLA a naturopath visit later - I am experimenting with Maca
(Lower Fat) Maca- Latte
275ml -water
200ml -almond milk
1tsp -tumeric powder
1tsp -carob powder
1tsp -ginger powder
1tsp -inulin
1tbsp -Maca powder
pinch - pepper
*This is how I like my Latte, with plenty of warmth. Add more almond milk or minus the ginger if you feel its too strong.
*Maca is nutty in flavor, and pairs well with a fat like coconut oil and almond milk.
*Because of its likeness to cinnamon or nutmeg, you can also replace turmeric or ginger in my recipe for cinnamon or nutmeg.
*inulin is a type of 'sugar' or 'sweetener' that is full of fiber which is why I use it. If it is not available to you, syrup (I have tried with coconut syrup) or sugar should do the trick.
*Feel free to play around with the milk to water ratio. My Latte is (lower) in fat, but if you prefer almond milk over water, feel free to adjust
- Combine all dry ingredients in a cup
- Boil water and almond milk separately (I do not have any fancy latte machine, so I used a kettle to boil water, and a pot to boil the milk)
- When the water has boiled, pour it slowly over the dry ingredients. Stir to make sure the clumps are out. Make sure to also keep an eye on the pot of almond milk and turn it off when it begins to boil.
- Remove the milk from heat. To make the milk foam more, use a handheld blender or whisk for a few moments until you reach the desired amount of foam. If you are fine without foam, skip this step
- Pour the almond milk into the cup with the water and other ingredients
- Enjoy!
WHY MACA??
I am so glad you asked 😃
Maca is a cruciferous root vegetable and grows high up the Andes of South America. Maca, known by the locals for millennia for its health benefits, has become a recent hit in the western world.
Maca is great for vegans or plantbased diets like mine, as it is a complete protein, containing all 20 amino acids including the 8 (9) essential amino acids
Maca is rich with minerals, such as zinc, calcium and magnesium.
What a coinscidence! Exactly the minerals my morning coffee was picking a fight with!
Besides its mineral and vitamin content, Maca is also know for helping aid hormonal imbalances (pms), stress, fatigue and fertility.
Basically, Maca like any good adaptogen responds to and helps regulate stressors and physiological functions.
As promised, I haven't completely deserted my cup of joe, but I have limited it's presence, especially while I am eating! A Maca-latte is the first coffee alternative I have found that satisfies my lust for coffee.
and THAT's huge!
Ciao for now, sweet steemers
💚
Only one vote and one comment, that is so sad, well here's my vote, dont have much voting power at the moment so it will be a low % vote. Here's also your second comment, hope you have a nice day :) welcome to steemit :P
Awe! Thank you so much for your comment :) That made my morning! I just started 3 days ago, and I am still learning the ropes - so I am guessing this takes some time and some patiences and a little bit of work :) But I have hope in my abilities and the steemitcommunity!
Give me a follow or resteem if you find something you like! I would greatly appreciate it! Thanks for the read and the vote :)
Even though there's only one Maca latte in the pictures above, she actually made one for me as well. And I can vouch for the fact that this tastes really yummi :)
It's a really good go between for situations when you've had too much coffee and you feel tea is too watery.
Great post! This looks super yummy! I don't think I've ever had maca before but I would love to try this. Keep up the good work! I am new too, so still trying to figure Steemit out. It's so interesting how some posts take off and others are essentially ignored. I think it just takes time to gain a following.
