Love isn't something you find. Love is something that finds you.
-Loretta Young
I recently came across this quote and it immediately resonated with me. However, I didn't know much about the quoter Loretta Young.
It appears that Young had an interesting life and after I learned more about her, the quote had another level of meaning.
Who is Loretta Young? She is most known for her acting career in films in the 1930s-1940s and her "equally successful career as hostess of The Loretta Young Show." Source - IMDb
Even though she died in 2000 she still "remains a symbol of beauty, serenity, and grace. But behind the glamor and stardom was a woman of substance whose true beauty lied in her dedication to her family, her faith, and her quest to live life with a purpose." Source - YouTube
Young had the charm and talent to survive the silent films era, the golden era of film, and she made her mark on television.
Few knew the secret she hid from the world...
While on the film Call of the Wild, the 24-year-old unmarried Young became pregnant with famed Clark Gable's child. As a devout Catholic and with her knowledge that this scandal could ruin her career, she secretly had the baby. She didn't even tell Gable about the child.
The ingenious Young devised a way to keep the secret from everyone and as a smoke screen, gave the baby girl named Judith and then gave her up for adoption and when she was 19 months old, Young adopted her. To the world, this baby appeared to be her adopted daughter not her own biological child.
It wasn't until Judith was 31 that she found out that Young was her biological daughter and that Gable was her father. Years later when Young was 87, she admitted that the "affair" between Gable wasn't completely consensual. When Young heard the expression "date rape" she identified it to her one-time sexual encounter with Gable.
Clearly, the unexpected pregnancy and process of concealing a child wasn't Young's life plan. She braved through it all and found love in an unforeseen way.
"Love isn't something you find. Love is something that finds you."
