you could start with something simpler like lmms or hydrogen (free with linux from the standard repos , there's probably a windows version too) fruityloops is a LOT to wrap your head around for a starter :) , the others are free and open source so there's nothing lost with trying. The system for tracking is somewhat the same so if you get around in those you'll probably find your way around floops easier ... or if you got the real cash i think propellerheads Reason is probably still ichiban (but that doesn't have or didnt have back when the world was young timestretching samples afaik) ...
