Today I will show you another interesting fact about Portugal!
Portugal produces over than half of the World’s Cork
The cork comes from the bark of the cork oak.
The reason cork has these caracteristics is its composition rich in suberin, a lipid that accumulates in the cell Wall.
The first extraction of cork occurs, usually, when the tree reaches between 25 and 30 years, and the extraction takes place in June to August.
Currently, cork is a raw material that is used in floor coverings, termal and acoustic insulation, in the manufacture of musical instruments, in decoration articles, in the componentes for footwear, and other segments.
Portugal has na área of 730 thousand hectares of cork oak forest and is responsible for more than 50% of the world production of cork.
