People tend to get fixated on things like followers and be jealous of other people. I think with time and a lot of work from the community steemit will start to change that mentality into that of helping others.

It's about the mentality, exactly that.
People usualy think, not in this particullar topic, if they have a big number of audience they will earn and gain lot of trust and confidence. The thing is that even thought we have large audience we may have small rewards, things may happen the other way, having small audience but with power will earn a lot.
Exactly. And also in time, you will see that a large following of a person does not result in engagement.

when i joined steemit i was told that you need followers to make it here but as time went by i realized its a race for futility , they dont add much so i change tact and concentrated on writing great articles
