Great stuff Adam! People sure do love to throw the word "pride" around with military function, but seem to miss the ignorance with that association. Pride is defined as a feeling/pleasure/satisfaction derived from ONE'S OWN ACHIEVEMENTS or WIDELY ADMIRED QUALITIES. Just what exactly did anyone do to achieve being born within a certain region of invisible lines on a map, and why is that admirable?

I think patriotic pride is a product of indoctrination. When you see someone become very reactive over a belief it's because it's deeply ingrained and there is a strong emotional bond attached to it. People get indoctrinated very young. Children have no idea or choice and follow through as adults unless it's fractured at some point and they start thinking for themselves. (Of course, they grow up in an environment rich in propaganda that nurtures and reinforces their invisible belief system. Which is why it's so hard to reach some.)
Very true. I'm beginning to realize that I need to have more compassion toward these indoctrinated folks, but having never understood supporting any political figure for my own well being has made this more difficult.
