DTube Daily — On the importance of SPACE / CALM, QUIET, PAUSE, BREATH, LISTENING — Vlog #7

in #dtube7 years ago

A breath of CALM to you, dear Steemians!

Today I was thinking about what kind of video I could put together, and I watched several videos from other great DTube Daily folks out there. And I thought that I could put a little bit of calm into the mix. It's not often that we feel we can be calm in a video, so this is my brief attempt.

In my background as a classical composer and musician, space is everything. Like in visual art, it's not just about the notes that you play; it's about the space in between.

One of my favorite stories comes from the book, Free Play, and talks about a master flute player. I read this book in college, so I'm not sure if I'm getting the story correct, but that's just fine by me. It goes as follows.

There's a student who is the best flute player in his entire area. The elders of his area are astounded by his talent and skill, and they send him to study with one of the greatest masters of the flute in all of the land.

The boy, who knows how to play every note, and in every possible way, is asked by his new master teacher to play only one simple melody. When he plays the melody, the teacher says to him, "No, that's not it." The boy goes back home and practices, over and over again. Time after time, he goes back to the teacher, with only the same answer.

Eventually, the boy gives up the flute. He never was able to play the melody as the master wanted. He got a job, got married and had children, and lived his life, never touching the flute again.

Decades later, the boy, now a man, went to a flute concert. He was amazed by the music once again, and he went up to the performer afterwards. He told him that he had once also played the flute, but it had been years.

The master flute player asked if he wanted to try to play a tune. The man refused at first, and then he relented. He took the flute, and he played the same melody his teacher had always asked him to play, over and over again.

People standing all around stopped and watched the man as he played, with tears beginning to stream down their faces. "There is a master flute player," they said to one another.

It's not about the notes. It's about the space between.

Apologies for taking great liberties with the story (I'm sure). You can find the book online / it's about improvisation and jazz.

The musical bed under the second part of the video is the melody Aberystwyth, played in several parts by the viola da gamba / from one of my records, One of These Days.

nice meditation... space is everything!!!

Your voice is so soothing. 😌 I love the style of this video! I really hope you continue to create more things like this, its a nice contrast to some of the other things out in the evergrowing dtube.

Thanks 🙏

I’ll try! I didn’t intend on doing a video like this, lol. It might just calm me down, too.

It calmed me down so I can only imagine how it felt for you to create it!

I’m trying to figure out how to be “me” that will also help others to be entertained :) I have ended up making videos that are shorter, with a quieter voice. Maybe that’s just my thing :)

I think it suits you really well. And no doubt you'll move through and experiment with different ideas and concepts and find what you resonate with most.

Thanks @neeqi ! I appreciate it :)

Wow brother!! Just dope man!! That's all what I have to say :D If I listened to that before going to sleep, I would sleep like a baby haha

I guess it's also important to have a dope mic (yeti), but also your voice is soothing brother ;)

Winny out...for now ;)

PS: I posted my song today :)

Hey man, thanks!!

Yes, the yeti is great / this is my second one after the first one died while I was living in Germany. The key to the yeti setup is actually not having it on the table ... and suspend it like I have here. It’s a good mic. I have others that are “better”, but not nearly as easy to use with the Computer!

I’ll check out the video soon!

Thanks Re: the voice comment. I’ll have to do some more grown-up lullaby videos :)

I read the Steemit post before watching the video. 2 seconds in, I knew it was an eyes closed type of video.
This kind of stuff will really do well on DSound. Very calm.

That’s great advice! I’ll try something similar there!

Is it wrong if I got a bit excited from this video? (you know what I mean) ;)

Hm. I’m not sure I know what you mean.

Funny thing about this video : I was totally inspired by one of your early videos, where you talk about how to project and speak louder. So I sat down, and thought, what if i speak quieter. Ha! Fun experiment.

hahah that's awesome!

Hahaha. You know I was thinking that too. I was like "great, one guy tells me to shout, the other tells me to whisper" :)

Haha! 😂 @kevinli rocks / I’ll work on the louder voice later! I just didn’t have it in me yesterday!

Best part of my day is the 15-20 minutes of quiet meditation each morning. I have come to value that time so much now.

I need to do a better job of that! Thanks for the note Capn

I also meditate mate! It has helped me immensely!! Also around 20 minutes every morning :)

Winny out...for now ;)

What kind of meditation do you guys practice?

Mindfulness Meditation :)

Kent! How are you my friend?
This video mellowed me out so much, which is perfect right before bed, I appreciate the idea you had here, in a platform where it’s all loud and busy, having a chill out and relax is sometimes most welcome!
Coming to then read through your writing on this post afterwards, that story really resonated with me, what a great ideology!
Dealing with anxiety over the last few years, it’s certain things like this that really enhance a positive mindset for me, and actually classical and jazz music always helped through testing times, I have a feeling I’ll feel right at home here keeping up with your videos and music!
Thanks for sharing!

Hey Tim,

Thanks for this note! I really appreciate it! I kind of did the calm thing on a whim, and I’m happy I did. I’ll have to do more chill videos :)

Haha I like this video because its so different!! I am not good in being calm at all so thanks for the relaxing moment.
