I can't bring myself to buy pork anymore... They're just too smart. No dolphin, no pork, no octopus. Although I hate chickens, I do try and send signals to suppliers by buying the freest range chicken, beef (bison when I can). But the reality is (I learned this on an economics podcast) that the signals producers really respond to are the ones coming from value-adding industries. This means restaurants and fast food restaurants. Demands channeled through McDonald's have done more to change the production of food than anything grocery shoppers could hope to achieve. So you have a greater voice by channeling it through these retailers. Demand McDonald's use free-range chicken and beef, that's the only effective way to move this beyond a niche.
