I taught English for over 10 years and I heard the same thing. Explain the following to someone who only knows English as a second language:
If you can't get yourself off the couch, get your shoes on, get up and get out to get a job, then you should get through the day by getting more snacks and just get into the movie you are watching. At least you get to get more out of the TV you got. But I don't get why you ever got a car if you never get out.
To put that in Spanish for example, you would need: sacarte, ponerte, levantarse, salir, obtener, sobrevivir, comprando, mirar atentamente, recibiste, entender, compraste, y salir (just to replace the word get).
