What good is a DIY project if it is a pain in the you know what to maintain. Functionality and durability are one thing but maintaining that project is another. I find one of the toughest things when building a DIY project is planning for future maintenance.
When I first built the duck pond it only consisted of a big Rubbermaid tote dug into the ground with a small drain that went under the fence. What a nightmare that was!! The drain was always getting clogged and the sides of the tote began to collapse. The idea was... well I thought it was good but hey, you can't win them all. That idea got trashed and I created a bigger better pond that is easier to maintain. Plus the ducks love this bigger pond as you will see in the video.

In this video I show you guys how I keep the ducks happy by maintaining my past DIY projects. Cleaning out their house is a piece of cake, thanks to the liner I installed in it. I think it took longer for me to put this video together and post it than it did to clean out the house and pond. Making it easy to maintain, makes it easy for my kids to help out too. We have to perform this maintenance weekly, so it is very important to make it as easy as possible.

So next time you decide to create something and Do It Yourself, try to think of what you might have to do to maintain or repair it. Wait.. what?!?! Repair?!?!? Yes, I said repair. Something things need to be fixed and that is okay. It might now be easy making your project, but you can make it easy to maintain. Efficiency, that’s what I am all about.

I don't know if I'd take on keeping up with a 'duck habitat', geese wandering around the neighborhood are bad enough, but you seem to have a handle on it. Things I wouldn't have thought of.
Well done, and upvoted. I don't think it would do any good to splatt the splatter ha ha ha... you got the upvote though @jlsplatts
We have them as pets but also their tasty eggs. We just have 5 and I am sure glad I designed the house and pond for ease of maintenance. Plus they are super funny to watch run around the yard. The ducks we have are called Indian Runner ducks. They don’t fly they run. Lol
Do they lay eggs like chickens? Without having mated or fertilized them?
Never had a duck or goose egg.
A friend of mine cooked a goose one year, rather than turkey, that was
some Good eatin' there! Both have more fat, all dark meat. I don't like turkey much at all.
I know you said they were pets and here I am talking about eating them.
Sorry bout that @jlsplatts ♥
DAHAHAHA No worries, my family are avid duck hunters. I have 4 hens and 1 drake. Even during the winter months I get 3 eggs a day from them. Chicken almost completely stop laying and they don’t handle the winter cold as well.
You know I am not 100% sure because I have always had a drake or two around. This is our second winter with the ducks, so we are still working on out system when the snow comes. 😉
Congratulations on the reward here, I thought I read somewhere Dtube was on their way out—I’m glad that was fake news.
I mean, you know I’m a big fan of yours, I can’t count all of the times I’ve said when we think of DIY, you’re at the top of the list.
I’m the dumbest guy in this conversation, I’ll hold that trophy high but... uhm, @jlsplatts, I’m gonna need you to explain this one. 👍🏿
PS—That cannonball will sober anyone up.
Ummm that is ODD... how in the world!!!! If I can’t explain it.... aliens... ALIENS DID THIS!!!
You probably didn’t have your phone plugged in.
Eh, your support this whole time I’ve been doing whatever it is I’m doing has been encouraging, brother Splatts. Woah! Hey! My autocorrect spelled out your whole last name just now which, by the way, I never would’ve been able to do without autocorrect!!
