This whole idea excites me, and I want to understand it, but I feel like I'm reading in a different language, and I am only understanding simple words and phrases, but not the entire idea, or how I can profit from it. It's so close, yet so far from my grasp. I hope to really understand it someday soon. As for now, I'll just up vote.
It's going to take some time for this revolutionary technology to be adopted by the world. It will happen though, Its just a matter of time ;) It will continue to scale just like the internet did.
@kennyskitchen makes some pretty valid points. Bitcoin and some of these other coins will have to figure out a way to reduce transaction costs and time

The point about most of these cryptos being stock is so important to keep in mind..i find that most people do not even consider this. People talk about the technology as if it is the main means of driving up the prices...in reality, most of these cryptos are made to be traded on exchanges and profited from...it doesn’t matter if the company sucks...which stock, after it is purchased- price goes up and holders can sell for a gain..
I’m digressing but that section really resonated with me.

It sure has become difficult to use Bitcoin and Etherum lately, and I agree it's not a currency anymore, Bitcoin has become a store of value. Other Cryptocurrencies are going to take Bitcoin's place as a currency, but I don't think there is a clear leader yet.
Ya, it's hard to say what'll come out on top. Honestly, I hope there is no #1 currency, I want there to always be an wider field of options. DASH/Monero for those who want more security, Doge/STEEM for those who want the cheapest fees, etc.
Some day STEEM cards for the ATM and 5 sec transactions .. I believe that day is not that far off ,, Good post thanks jkenny .. you found a follower

My impression is that most people who have invested in bitcoins and all the rest are in it to make money on the stock price, not on using them as a medium of exchange.

Bitcoin is a speculative investment at this point as far as I can tell. Hold em if you got em, I doubt we've seen the top of this. Steem I have wishfully ignored for a year, coming back now and seeing how far we have come is promising, but I wonder how much of these gains in value are due and tied to the massive value increase of bitcoin itself, which is still the primary interface for most individuals to access the greater crypto ecosystem.
