Watch Garlic - Harvesting & Curing the Bulbs video on DTube
Liz Crain discusses and demonstrates the process of harvesting and curing Garlic. After they're done growing, bulbs can be pulled right out of the ground before the stalks dry. They can be left in the sun for one day to dry and then put under cover to cure.

Harvesting Garlic
- Harvest the Garlic before the stalk dries completely. There should be a little green still.
- Grab the Garlic plant by its stalk and gently pull upwards.
- After harvesting them leave them out in the sun to dry for one day.
- Put them under cover to continue to dry and cure.
- Leave the long stem intact to allow nutrients and flavor to reach the bulb.
Growing Garlic
- Cloves can be placed into the ground like a potato and will grow into a full garlic plant.
- Garlic seed will grow into its more natural smaller form and not be of much use.
- Remove the Scapes below the flower bulb to allow the root bulb to thicken up. The scape is a delicacy in many countries! Liz likes to saute them in butter or pickle them.
- Ideally the location the Garlic is planted is rotated yearly.

I used to plant garlic but got away from in recent years. I always planted in October or November and harvested the next July when the plants started dying off.
