Introducing B&B: Roommates. The first Animated Short film on Steemit!

This story is about two military robots who are roommates. Brutus is large and in charge and loves things in their proper order. Bob, not so much. Check out what mischief these two get into when things get out of hand and the tensions are high...

This short film was created by me and my amazing production team (Ben, Ike, Felicia, Antonio, Nate and Danelle = B.I.F.A.N.D) whilst in art school. B&B won us 4 out of 5 awards at the NEXT Talent Awards. I wanted to create an animated movie like Wall-E, so I pitched my idea and my 3D model Brutus to our Animation Production Class, and my Idea got selected as the 2 quarter major project. I was thrilled, as being the Director, Producer, 3d Modeler, 3d Lighting TD and leading the team to create an animated short film was a lot to bite off, but I was up for the challenge!

We had hopes of submitting the short film to Siggraph, alas life got in the way and held us back from achieving the submission by deadline. It's a lot of work to submit your work to Film Festivals, but at least we got 1 in, won a bunch of awards and have a short film and experience we will never forget.

I really enjoyed my time with my team, and creating B&B was a dream come true. Ever since I was inspired by the movie Wall-E, I wanted to create 3D Models and short films. I'm sure this short film wont be my last, but if it is, I would be satisfied with what we accomplished. I'm very proud of my team.

Pictured above are 2 of the 4 awards we won, my team was kind enough to gift them to me, but I only kept 1, which was "Best Short Animation" and best design went to my dear friend Joe G. whom killed it on the sound effects. I gave the rest of the awards to those I felt deserved them the most. I modeled Brutus and did all the lighting and texturing for the short film, as well as the sound track, but I wasn't alone in creating this work of art.

The concept art was done by my buddy Marquis. Which is incredible work.

As you can see, Brutus wasn't easy to model, in fact we had to remove many parts to get him Animation ready.

Here are some fancy production renders I did of Brutus.

Notice his big red eye, which was inspired by HAL 9000 (2001: A Space Odyssey)

The body's shape was inspired by the Animated Disney movie "The Incredibles"

One of the images from the original short film credits pays homage to Star Wars.

Below me and my team stand proud holding all four our of five possible Awards. We earned every single one of them. I couldn't have done it without my team. Very proud.

We drew a pretty big crowd for the Awards. Hundreds got to see our short film on the silver screen.

Maybe one day I'll make enough Crypto to create a Feature Length Film, one can dream right? Hope you all enjoyed our short film and thank you for your time. :)

Thanks friend. 🤖

Hey @lifeinspired nice little animation video. It must have taken some time to finish this project? I noticed my upvote is worthless, well, hope you get some more, great post!

Ha ha, no your vote counts buddy. I don’t care if it yields money. Thanks for your comment! 🤙

Yes, this animation took 2 quarters to complete from start to finish. 1st quarter was building models, texturing, lighting and rigging, then the animation of the characters. Then second quarter was all rendering. 😊🤙

Does rendering still take ages?

Sadly yes, it takes a lot of processing power to render each frame. Think about it this way, a movie is 24-30 frames a second right? So I’m a “motion picture” movie, you have to render each frame “like a photograph” 24 photos for 1 second of film, times that by 60 seconds and you get “144 pictures” to render for 1 minute of film, then times it by how long your short film or feature film is, and you get the idea...

Each single frame can take up to 25 minutes or longer to render... so as you can see, it takes a very long time. Even in awesome movies today, all the special effect overlaying over live action footage... it’s crazy.

I just got back from seeing the movie 🎥 Maze Runner “The Death Cure” and it was amazing... blows me away... the VFX and Motion Graphics were spot on... outstanding

Interesting, I thought computers would be faster now days. I am going to check out the new maze runner, thanks for the tip!

Totally, and they are, but not as fast as we need them to be for rendering video, animation and motion graphics. Cheers 🍻 😎🤙
