Are you dreaming about quitting your current job and becoming a full time DTuber? This can get really tough and it's harder to earn money on DTube / steemit than you might think. Here's a quick and easy calculation for you.
Set your desired net income
As I'm living in Germany and I only know about the German tax and insurance system I will tell you an example in Euro but you can switch this into any other currency and amount based on the tax and insurance system in your country and of course which fits your lifestyle.
So, my calculation will be made for a desired net income of 2,000 EUR which should be an average amount for most Germans.
If you're a single and you want to receive a net income like this you will need to get a gross income of about 3,000 EUR due to German tax, health and annuity insurance.
The base of my calculation
Now 1.00 USD is currently worth around 0.80 EUR which means 3,000 EUR would be equivalent to 3,750 USD.
But why am I talking about USD now? Because my calculation will base on the fiction that 1.00 SBD (Steem Backed Dollar) is worth 1.00 USD. At the moment this might not be correct but whether you like it or not, but these days we are steering to this direction and that's what the value of Steem was supposed to be.
The exchange
So, when you have set your desired amount which you would like to earn in one month the next question would be "How much upvote worth will I need on my content to reach this amount?".
First of all, you need to know that 25% of your total upvote worth under your video goes to your curators and another 25% will go directly to DTube. This means 50% of your total upvote worth is paid out to you, the author.
And this amount will also be split again 50/50 into SBD and Steem Power. So, only 25% of your total voting worth will be available for you for an instant payout.
If we come back to our example with 3,750 USD (or 3,000 EUR) this means you will need at least four times as much total upvotes on your videos, which would be 15,000 of total upvote worth per month. This again means 500 total upvote worth per day on your videos!
Disclaim on Steem Power reinvestment
Of course, at a certain point you can say that you don't want to reinvest into steem by powering up. But as half of your payout will always be powered up you can't instantly pay out this power. Today you will need about 13 weeks to power down completely to 0%.
Disclaimer
I know this is not a precise calculation as there are a lot of different variables which are not included.
Like for example transaction fees, the upvote of your own posts, comment and curation income and the fact that I guess about 15 - 30 minutes after posting the full upvote will go directly to the author.
The idea of this article / video was more about giving the people who just joined or that are considering to join a more realistic feeling of how much upvotes they will need to earn a certain amount of money than they might have.
I hope this article and video were helpful for you. If you enjoyed, make sure to upvote, follow and resteem. And what's most important…
…live your dream!

Slight correction: Dtube takes 25% of author rewards, so from a $100 potential rewards, the payout to you would be : $56.25
Oh, thanks for correcting me. I asked someone from the DTube dev team but like I have just seen I misunderstood him.
I think this is how it works anyway, it's so hard to calculate it in the wallet with the fluctuation price and SBDs and everything else lol..
Very useful calculation, and very helpful. Like you said, most people (including me) will at first make that simple, but wrong, calculation - and then be in for a huge surprise when it doesn't happen the way the think haha.
The expectation / average wage is similar in the UK to the German one, so those figures will work here too. It's everyone's hope that Steem will rise high though, so if you manage to invest a lot of SP, then tiny powerdowns should be able to add a little to the total and hopefully :)
Otherwise, it's best to just treat it as 'extra' or an investment for the long term.
Yeah, I’m also hoping that Steem will rise again but I’m a kind of person who is more likely to calculate with the worst case instead of current or ideal situations.
And a powerdown is of course an option if you say for example that you’re satisfied with 10,000 SP and you payout the spillover.
Awesome discussion, my friend! Thanks for this! :) Onward and upward!
Sehr realistische Kalkulation! Ist dann doch mehr pro Tag als ich gedachte hatte :P
Jop, das dachte ich auch und habs dann nochmal nachgerechnet und doch das haut in etwa hin.
Really useful video, I think it is easy to get carried away and miscalculate everything. Steemit really is amazing, but I guess we have to be realistic so that we can enjoy it fully
Thanks for your feedback and for following! Yes, I guess a lot of people come / came here with too high expectations including me.
That’s why I wanted to make some things clear. But at the moment I don’t really care much about money. I see this more as a process of learing and the community itself has become the most important part for me.
Great discussion with so many talking about wanting to go full time. Good to be realistic in the expectations from the start :)
Even if you’re doing a realistic calculation going full time in such a volatile market can be very careless. We should all give our best, use the time now as early adopters to learn a lot and get some real fans and maybe some day in the future when the crypto market becomes more stable we can think about something like this. But definitely not now.
Loved the facts and figures. Well done for putting the work in to calculate the sums. Well one day we can all hope this will be us hahah
Good morning Matthew, very good job. Thanks for that. Mmmh didn't thought it would be that much. But maybe one day all of us can do it ;-) We wish you a nice day. Greetings from Phuket
Let the good times roll. Don''t think about full time until at least the end of this year
"So what your saying is" within the first month anyone can be a full time dtuber?
I like you want to bring things to reality, though living your dream! I also want to start making videos. I have my idea. I've bought two micros and some other things I need. I hope I will have the time to do at least ONE video a week. I don't even know yet, if I can do it. I haven't got much clue about the technical aspect of it. Wish me luck!
You can do that! And don't worry about the technical part it is way less complicated than I thought. I'm also not very talented with stuff like that but the basics like cutting, pictures in pictures, descriptions and adding music are very simple and can be learned within some minutes.
And everything else like fancy effects, thumbnails and so on come with time. No need to be a pro from day one. Most vloggers here are amateurs and what's still most important here is the message itself.
But if you have any questions or need help you can contact me. I'm always willing to help others. I'm looking forward to your first video :)
Thank you for encouraging me! :-)
it still makes sense to have your foot in the door early
