History of the Kings of Britain #9 - Merlin and the Two Dragons by Geoffrey of Monmouth

in #dtube6 years ago

This is the ninth reading from Geoffrey of Monmouth’s History of the Kings of Britain.

Vortimer is poisoned by his Saxon step-mother and Vortigern makes himself king again. The Saxons hear that Vortimer is dead and 300,000 of them arrive in ships, claiming that they want to make peace. The Britons arrange to meet with them for a love day, but the treacherous Saxons then slaughter all the unarmed nobility of the country. After this Vortigern fears that they will want to kill him too, so he tries to build an impregnable fortress but it keeps falling down over night. He summons his wise men who tell him that he first needs to find a boy with no father and then spill his blood on the foundations.

Merlin is found by them playing with a friend and he tells them that he has no father. His mother is summoned to the King and explains that his father was an incubus demon who visited her at night. Merlin then shows that the King’s wise men are fools by correctly identifying the real source of why the castle keeps falling down, it is because there are two dragons under it. He then proceeds to prophesy about the fate that awaits the country.
