UN: SecGen urges maximum restraint amid Jammu Kashmir dispute
The UN Secretary-General's spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said that head of the UN has been watching the situation in Jammu Kashmir with concern and called on all parties to exercise maximum restraint at a news conference in New York on Thursday.
"The Secretary-General has been following the situation in Jammu and Kashmir with concern and makes an appeal for maximum restraint," said Dujarric.
"The position of the United Nations on this region is governed by the charter of the United Nations and applicable security council resolutions. The Secretary-General also recalls the 1972 agreement on bi-lateral relations between India and Pakistan also known as the 'Simla Agreement' which states that the final statues of Jammu and Kashmir is to be settled by peaceful means in accordance with the charter of the United Nations," he added.
Dujarric also stated that India's recent restriction on movement in the region may worsen the human rights situation and that that all parties should refrain from taking any further decisions which may change the status of Jammu Kashmir.
On Monday the Indian government revoked Article 370 of India's constitution which guaranteed substantial autonomy for the territories. The article banned Indians from outside Jammu Kashmir taking up local government jobs, buying land and permanently settling there.
In response Pakistan suspended bi-lateral trade with India and expelled key diplomats.
