Oh, So What You’re Saying Is ________.jpg

Listening to someone’s full argument and then saying back to them “oh, so what you’re saying is” and then inserting a completely inaccurate take on the points laid out and summarizing them into something that fallaciously and purposefully misinterprets their view in order to create a claim to attack.

This is pretty similar to a strawman fallacy and this happens so often and the people who do this will do it so often that sometimes you might miss it, but you have to be careful to always correct them with what you actually meant and to avoid answering questions with built-in assumptions that make you look bad no matter the answer you give.

I wanted to talk about this because it’s become so prevalent in our discourse and people need to debate genuinely and honestly. This is for both sides, we also need to be aware of the people who are doing this and be mindful in how to navigate discussion with them and not get caught in one of the ideological language traps.

So can you call such a person doing this a sophisticated spammer? Since he takes no time to read and understand your post, but acts like he does, although going totally offpoint just so he can stay below spam detector radars?
What think ye?

I mean it's more so in a verbal debate that this happens, but yeah people doing this in any capacity are usually being malicious

Manipulation in talking is often a thing. We have to protect ourselves.

Exactly, I totally agree

great point!

Thanks I appreciate that :)

Let’s keep on - awake to the fake and steem on.@scottcbusiness great explanation of how an open and honest debate should flow. However, we would go astray to assume that politicians for example are seeking to be open and honest. In my opinion, the aim of any politician is to win votes and get good press so they will go to lengths to obfuscate especially if they don’t have facts to back up a particular position. People get paid to “Spin” things. It is perhaps unethical but at the end of the day what matters politically is who sold their message best. If I can “Put words in your mouth “ so to speak and force you to spend your time of the defensive rather than on the offensive, I’m winning. The thing to do in dealing with disingenuous debaters is to quickly rubbish their Mia characterization of the facts and clearly state what your meaning in such a way that it cannot be spun. Their methods might be unethical but it’s perfectly legal.

I totally agree and the best we can do is learn and identify when politicians are manipulating us on our end so that we can navigate to what the truth really is and call out fallacious rhetoric

That it right there - we’ve got to be alert and judge for ourselves. Keep up the good work - peace.

Channel Of Communication is everything. If we see the practical world then one thing we observe regularly and that is Truth becomes False and vice versa due to the Channel Of Communication. And most of the times people face setbacks due to their way of Expression. Stay blessed.@scottcbusiness, The

Yes agreed! Thanks for your input :)

before talk we have to think that may our word don't hurt anyone and tha's the best thing.

That's definitely a great aim, but sometimes what must be said like the truth can be hurtful subjectively.

You are awesome :)

A appreciated how cool you are to have a very peaceful mindset. I don't like arguments at all. When someone did it, I let him talk until he finished his word. Then later on when there is an ice to his brain, I will talk back without hard attack or using words like a knife that may cuts his ego. I will be beautifully talking sometimes with tears in my eyes so we will be drowned to our emotion and no ego will be hurtled. Thanks for sharing @scottcbusiness

Thank you! I appreciate your feedback and insights :)

In communication principle, both parties should learn to adjust as much as possible into kind of attitude they want to express. I think the key to making a good manner and right conduct to a healthy conversation and without offending other person's stand or understanding is to cultivate and put into practice the old saying-- "It always better that each one of us should learn to: "slow to speak and quick to listen" type of communicator.

Yeah that's a great principle to go by, slow to speak and quick to listen
