McCulloch MacCat 38cc UltraSonic Carb Clean and Muffler Mod.
I picked up this McCulloch MacCat 2.3 cu.in. {38cc} chainsaw with an 18 in bar. It didn't run, but has spark and good compression. It's obvious why it didn't run because the fuel line in the gas tank was dissolved and the gas tank was loaded with crude. So I got the idea to clean up the carb with and ultrasonic cleaner and with a 5% to 10% solution of 'Awesome' cleaner. With the ultrasonic cleaner and with the heater on in the ultrasonic cleaner with the 'Awesome' detergent the carb came out like brand new. I reused the gaskets and used a tiny amount of Permatex gasket sealant made for rubber gaskets and fuel resistant to seal everything up in the carb again after it was thoroughly cleaned. Next I pulled off the muffler and did a slight muffler modification and opened up the muffler and baffles slightly to give the chainsaw more power. I didn't change the muffler too much but enough to let the engine breath better. I heard this saw is underpowered for that 18 in bar but with a little muffler mod this McCulloch Mac Cat 38cc with run the 18 inch bar no problem without bogging down. I also ran the muffler through the ultrasonic cleaner twice and got all the crude out of the muffler, so along with the muffler mod this chainsaw should breath freely. The chainsaw already had a new sparkplug in it as someone was trying to start it when the gas line was missing and totally dissolved in the gas tank. What I am waiting on is a gas line and that will be an easy install. I was able to clean the gas filter up like new with the ultrasonic cleaner and I will use the old gas filter with the new gas line, when the new gas line comes in.
This about the simplest and cheapest way to clean a chainsaw carb that is plugged up from bad gas. The muffler modification is free power for the chainsaw.
