If I read this https://lwn.net/Articles/738975/ correctly, there is a fix for Linux 64 bit by hiding the kernel from the user space. Sounds like it will result in a performance hit. Someone more technical than I may be able to explain exactly how it works. Ubuntu (the Linux distribution I have) security team released this document https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SecurityTeam/KnowledgeBase/SpectreAndMeltdown, stating: To address the issue, updates to the Ubuntu kernel and processor microcode will be needed. In the Timeline given, the release date is TBD.
