This is 100% unbiased in every single way: Ben Simmons is UNDOUBTEDLY the Defensive Player of the Year. Watching the Clippers-Jazz game right now and this is the only thing I can think about and it is infuriating. I will admit, Rudy is a big presence in the paint and can guard the rim and opposing centers fairly well. However, he could never guard a 1 or 2 guard. Ben Simmons is consistently defending the opposing team's best player and, almost every single game, is putting the CLAMPS on them.
Long story short, Ben's defense wins games. I do not believe Rudy's does. Comment below if you agree or disagree!
I agree Ben has been great defensively. I think they should change how the awards are given out. When it comes to giving other players praise for their accomplishments, the players are the best at that. Why should people who never played the game competitively vote on the awards.
I’m also favoring Ben in that debate. If Gobert was 3 inches shorter he’d be unemployed, dude parks the bus under the rim and waits for a moment to toss his arms in the air
Agree 100%
Hopefully either some better defensive metrics to show the impact of great defenders or voters move away from focusing too much on single stats like Blocks and Rebounds.
People love saying no one likes to drive to the rim when Gobert is playing...well no shit who wants to drive when there's a 7 footer sitting in the middle of the paint at all times. The second Gobert leaves the paint he becomes an average defender at best rather than a DPOY candidate.
